Jaufre is a lively, engaging and at times comedic tale of a knight from King Arthur's court. The young hero encounters all manner of unpleasant adversaries including giants and a demon knight, finds true love in the form of an independent, wealthy and hot-tempered heiress, and is tricked into going to the rescue of an underwater fairy. This story, dedicated to a king of Aragon and told in Occitan, was first set down in writing in the thirteenth century but does not appear to have reached English-speaking readers until the late nineteenth century. It was, however, originally intended for oral performance rather than for solitary readers. This new adaptation is an attempt to capture the spirit of the original Occitan, keeping close to the way it was told, and to bring the story to life in the hope that other storytellers will once again tell the tale of Jaufre and new listeners will enjoy his exploits.

In this pathfinding study, Suzanne Fleischman brings together theory and methodology from various quarters to shed important new light on the linguistic structure of narrative, a primary and universal device for translating our experiences into language. Fleischman sees linguistics as laying the foundation for all narratological study, since it offers insight into how narratives are constructed in their most primary context: everyday speech. She uses a linguistic model designed for "natural" narrative to explicate the organizational structure of "artificial" narrative texts, primarily from the Middle Ages and the postmodern period, whose seemingly idiosyncratic use of tenses has long perplexed those who study them. Fleischman develops a functional theory of tense and aspect in narrative that accounts for the wide variety of functions—pragmatic as well as grammatical—that these two categories of grammar are called upon to perform in the linguistic economy of a narration.

Composed in the second half of the fourteenth century by an anonymous author, the story offers the first recording of the Sleeping Beauty folktale, incorporated into the adventures of two knights. Many elements in the romance are comic, suggesting that Blandin is not simply a tale of knights in battle, but also a parody of medieval romance in general.
