The Temporal Lobe And Limbic System written by Pierre Gloor and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Medical categories.

Covering the detailed anatomy, physiology, and clinical aspects of the temporal lobe and the limbic system, this monograph makes a timely appearance because of the widespread interest in this subject in relation to epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, and schizophrenia. The structural and functional information serves as an important foundation for the detailed anatomical knowledge necessary for the interpretation of imaging. The components of the temporal lobe are characterized. The temporal isocortex is considered from the point of view of its principal cellular constituents, connectivity, columnar organization, and how the cortex embodies experience. The cortical association areas for vision, audition, degustation, visceral sensory function, and olfaction are treated in detail, and the cortical area of the temporal lobe relating to speech is discussed. The structure of the insula, the temporal cortex, and its connectivity to the thalamus, pulvinar, striatum, and claustrum are described thoroughly. A chapter reviews the structure, connections and functions of the olfactory system, as well as its social aspects and pathological conditions. The largest chapter deals with the hippocampus--its anatomy and connections, its cellular architectonics, its relation to memory, and its varied functions. The final chapter details the amygdala, its connections, and its significant role in temporal lobe seizures.

The Temporal Lobe, Volume 187 covers the exponential growth of studies on the relationships between brain and language/cognition, many of which involved the temporal lobe. This volume summarizes research on the anatomy and function of the temporal lobe under both normal and pathological conditions. In addition, it discusses the interactions of the temporal lobe with other brain structures. The book highlights the role of the temporal lobe in language processing as well as vision, object, face recognition and processing. The book also discusses the temporal lobe's role in reading, speech and the processing of color, music, action and memory. Temporal lobe disorders, assessments and treatments are also covered, including encephalitis, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, Korsakov’s syndrome, and more. Summarizes research on the anatomy and function of the temporal lobe Identifies the importance of the temporal lobe to language and speech Includes how the temporal lobe interacts with other brain structures Reviews disorders of the temporal lobe, including dementia, encephalitis, and more

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy 1948 to 1986 is a prospective study in biographical medicine. The four decades covered have yielded several revolutions in the understanding of brain development both normal and abnormal. These are described in their biographical context. The book is based on a comprehensive study of one hundred children with temporal lobe epilepsy, all of whom were followed to adulthood. A separate study was made of eighty-two patients treated by neurosurgery. The authors employ a novel and revolutionary approach that emphasizes the relevance of the disease and its associated problems to each person's life history. Flow charts are used to illustrate critical developmental factors. The work is a paradigm of the practice of medicine and surgery as part of human biological science. It provides lessons of direct relevance to all clinicians involved in the treatment of patients with epilepsy.

In seeking a neural basis for human behaviour, several areas of the brain have been examined. It is now agreed that the temporal lobes and their downstream connections, the limbic system, are closely linked with the feeling and expression of emotional behaviour, and that lesions in this region and dysfunction of the system are associated with many severe psychopathological conditions and behavioural problems.

This book is devoted to the surgical treatment of epilepsy and its consequences, and provides an extraordinary perspective on the fascinating question of the relationship between brain and mind. Contrary to the current emphasis on statistics and objectivity, this book is dedicated to understanding the whole person, the life and experiences of the individual. It reports on cutting-edge technical skills provided with a human touch. This book reflects the understanding that the temporolimbic seizure originates in tissue providing the substrate for the emotional life and memory. Finally, it emphasizes the value of clinical research – here, conducted in the course of the diagnosis and surgical treatment of epilepsy – in helping to elucidate the relationship between brain and mind.

Seized written by Eve LaPlante and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Psychology categories.

Seized is a narrative portrait of a common brain disorder that can alter personality, illuminating the mind-body problem and the limits of free will. An invaluable resource for anyone touched by epilepsy, Seized gives first-hand accounts of three ordinary patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), explaining what they suffer and how they cope. The book also tells the stories of creative luminaries diagnosed with or suspected of having TLE, including van Gogh, Dostoevsky, Lewis Carroll, Saint Paul, and Flaubert. The psychological implications of Seized are, according to Publishers Weekly, “staggering.” Kirkus Reviews called the book “Fascinating . . . LaPlante’s descriptions of the human brain are wonderfully concrete, her historical research is well presented, and her empathy for TLE’s victims is clear.” In this “fascinating account of medical research,” Howard Gardner noted, “LaPlante shows how a brain scar may cause bizarre aggressive or sexual behavior—and works of profound creative imagination.”
