This book is a first attempt to unify and explain, through the language of pure mathematics called categories and sheaves, the mechanism of mental activities. Humanities and philosophy meet physics and mathematics at both levels of the microcosm and macrocosm. The purpose of this book is to provide systematic and unifying methods for the physical and the cognitive aspects of a conscious entity. The philosophical thoughts of the West and the East will be formulated and presented in terms of categories and sheaves using pure mathematics. A definition-based rigorous approach and method using categorical sheaf theory is a completely new attempt to formulate the ontological philosophies, which must be consistent with quantum physics. For example, it is the author’s intent to capture reality as a pair of the cognitive realm and the physical realm, for which the author uses the notion of (temporal) topos theory, as a pair of an initial object and a terminal object of temporal topos. This book allows philosophers and natural scientists to interact to discuss and observe the physical world and the cognitive world. That is, a brain existing in the physical world is simultaneously functioning in the cognitive world. The author provides detailed descriptions for the process from the small to the large, which is a part of descent-sheaf theory in mathematics by gluing the local data to obtain a global object. A description of a process of “understanding” (and realizing-recognizing-discovering) is also formulated in terms of temporal topos language. The author provides all the needed mathematical background so that readers whose main interests are in humanities can enjoy and appreciate the rigorousness and the harmony of humanities and natural sciences.

In recent years, problems such as environmental and economic crises and pandemics caused by new viruses have been occurring on a global scale. Globalization brings about benefits, but it can increase the potential risks of “systemic problems”, leading to system-wide disruptions. The coronavirus pandemic, declared on March 11, 2020, by the World Health Organization, has revealed social disparities in the form of a higher risk of death for people of low-socioeconomic status and has caused massive destruction of the economy and of globalization itself. Extensive efforts to cope with these challenges have often led to the emergence of additional problems due to the chain of hidden causation. What can be done to protect against such emerging challenges? Despite the resulting complexity, once these individual problems are considered as different aspects of a single whole, seemingly contradictory issues can become totally understandable, as they can be integrated into a single coherent framework. This is the integrationist approach in contrast to the reductionist approach. Situations of this kind are truly relevant to understanding the question, “What are creative complex systems?” This book features contributions by members and colleagues of the Kyoto University International Research Unit of Integrated Complex System Science. It broadens our outlook from the traditional view of stability, in which global situations are eventually stabilized after the impact of destruction, to “creative” complex systems. John Cleary here explores the role which the mathematical sciences play in Aristotle's philosophical thought, especially in his cosmology, metaphysics, and epistemology. He also thematizes the aporetic method by means of which he deals with philosophical questions about the foundations of mathematics. The first two chapters consider Plato's mathematical cosmology in the light of Aristotle's critical distinction between physics and mathematics. Subsequent chapters examine three basic aporiae about mathematical objects which Aristotle himself develops in his science of first philosophy. What emerges from this dialectical inquiry is a different conception of substance and of order in the universe, which gives priority to physics over mathematics as the cosmological science. Within this different world-view, we can better understand what we now call Aristotle's philosophy of mathematics.
