Excerpt from The Tree Doctor: A Book on Tree Culture HE Americans are a people who love the beautiful, and yet, strange to say, they have destroyed the trees, which are among the grandest objects of all nature. This, however, has not been intentionally done. The pioneers made war on trees, slaughtered them, burnt them up and got rid of them the easiest and quickest Way they could devise. To a certain extent, this was excusable, as the land was needed for other purposes. Thousands now regret that they did not preserve some of the giants of the native forests. The majestic elm in this photograph is one of them. What would you give to have it in your yard? Our people now deeply deplore the mistakes that have been made, and are spending millions of dollars annually, in the hope of establishing sufficient shade and fruit trees for the requirements of man and beast. In spite of all their noble efforts they are meet ing defeat on every hand. The whole trouble is traceable to two oversights. It was my intention, five years ago, to point out these facts and the accompanying evils in a lec ture, by the aid of the stereopticon; but I saw that a thousand persons in that work could not reach the masses in' ten years. Then I thought I would write for some papers, butreadily discovered that but comparatively few people could be reached, and such read ing is not easily preserved. Finally, I determined to put the camera to work. Two authorities might disagree on a certain point, and the public say, They can't both be right; may be both are wrong. When, however, the camera gives you a picture, that is something from which you cannot get away. I had first intended to use fifty photographs, then made it one hundred. Again, finding there was a call for knowledge on the landscape and floral arts, I have used 175 photographs, and could use more to advantage, but cannot for the money. These books are well written, well illustrated, and sold at a reasonable price. The aim of each is to describe all the trees, or approximately all, and to Show the general reader how he may learn to know them apart. All this is as it should be, and I doubt if any other country is so well provided. But the book that describes all the trees has this Obvious limitation: it can have little or no room left for other interesting and practical matter about trees. In Short, the identification book which deals only with the kinds and names of trees is necessarily one-sided, and there is a great need and a clear call today for an all-round tree book. Moreover, all the trees are too many for most readers. The greater the number to consider, the harder it is to distinguish and to remember them. Few of us care to know about all the oaks; it is the ten or a dozen common oaks that we want to know - to recognize wherever we see them growing. This book aims in Part IV to describe the common and important trees that grow in the states north of Virginia and Arkansas, and east of the Rocky Mountains. Among the native species are included many forms introduced from other countries, and commonly planted in the United States. About 125 different kinds of trees are described. The limits set to the identification part of this book give room for the consideration of much besides that is of interest and importance to any one who loves trees and longs for a closer and more intelligent acquaintance with them. In Part II the author has nothing new nor startling to reveal on the subject of the life that a tree lives from day to day. The facts stated are set down in books already. But these books are written for the special, not for the general reader. They are learned books, which abound in technical terms. Excerpt from New England Trees in Winter The photographic illustrations are all originals, most of them by the other author. Although one of us is responsible for the text and for the selection of the material photographed and the other for the photographs, we have freely consulted and the bulletin is therefore to be considered a joint publication. The order of arrangement of the Species in the text and the scientific names follow themsage of the seventh edition of Gray's Manual and the latter are in accord with the rules laid down in the Vienna Congress. The figures and descriptions given are of trees for the most part growing wild in New England. A few rarer Species which occur in New England only very locally or in isolated instances have been omitted from illustration. In their places, however, some of the more frequently cultivated trees, have been included because of their value for forestry planting in New England or because of their familiarity in city ornamental plant ings. The varieties of cultivated forms are so numerous that it is obviously possible to take account of only the most common types. Their inclusion, it is believed, will add to the value of the publi cation especially for its use in cities. The keys can be absolutely relied upon only for the Species just mentioned from New England. New England, including as it does the meeting ground between the northern and southern floras, is extremely rich in the species of trees represented. The bulletin, therefore, especially in its descriptive text and illustrations Should prove of service outside of the geographically restricted region described.
