This book encompasses a unique decade in the history of the United States, one that figuratively exploded in terms of business expansion and worth, social experimentation, individual ingenuity and general prosperity the vast majority of those achievements coming in the first half of the period. Who possibly would have thought all those cutting edge gains would come to an abrupt halt as the 1930s loomed, eventually propelling the nation into a calamitous depression. Within these pages are the exploits of several important and controversial characters whose escapades helped shape not only their times but those for many years to follow. Very recognizable names -- even in current times such as Hearst, Darrow, Hoover, Capone and the obscure {but powerful} Wayne Wheeler were major protagonists of the decades events both publicly and covertly as chronicled in this volume. Others like Sacco and Vanzetti, Leopold and Loeb, were non-descript men whose murder trials initially revolted, then captivated the nations attention as the tales of their testimony spread throughout the daily front pages of every major newspaper in the country. Even Organized Baseball, Americas favorite pastime, was rocked by news of a scandal as arguably the sports best team would become branded as the Black Sox for baseball perpetuity. Hollywood would not escape their share of notoriety either as one of their best known and revered comedians was unwarrantably thrust into the national spotlight, an entertainment mogul was dogged by allegations of a hushed up murder with still another of Tinseltowns most controversial celebrities a victim of personal frailty. A small hamlet in Tennessee was the site of another national story, this one pitting the Bible against modern science. All these events began life with a national ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol {Prohibition} and ended with the devastation of the nations economic barometer {Wall Street}. While the passage of time has perhaps dulled the memory and effect the men and women detailed herein contributed to the culture of the United States, either in positive or negative ways, the retelling of their stories help us determine where we come from and hopefully, who we are.

Millions of dollars were flooding into Florida's economy in the Roaring Twenties. By 1925, real estate transactions were taking place faster than county clerks could record them. Land sales had virtually eclipsed tourism and farming as the state's source of astounding economic growth. It was no different from other frenetic manias - the people who jumped in early, and got out early, were the winners. Those late to the game were the dreamers.

No decade in American history has roared as loudly as the 1920s. For two centuries, the United States had lived in happy isolation from international issues. Then it was drawn into World War I.Although America was still fundamentally a provincial society, by the end of the war and the opening of the new decade, most Americans understood that a new era lay before the country.Despite Prohibition, it was an intoxicating decade, populated with characters as varied as Clarence Darrow, Henry Ford, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Charles Lindbergh, Woodrow Wilson - and flappers. It was a time when ideas about love, public decorum, dress, and speech were changing. It was a time of cultivation of the new, shocking, and sometimes, according to the standards of the previous decade, vulgar: the stocking rolled below the knee, four-letter words in the mouths of debutantes, and speakeasies. All of these details, along with the economic collapse that ended the decade and sparked the Great Depression, are captured in this vivid chronicle by noted historian Edmund O. Stillman.

The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties was a golden age of economic prosperity and liberal social change. Innovations in numerous industries revived a sluggish post-World War I economy, and mass production methods allowed for the standardized, rapid production of various goods, the most notable of which was the automobile. The roar of thousands of newly manufactured vehicles filled the city streets, and the ripple effect of the industry spawned a myriad of ancillary industries, such as car dealerships and mechanic shops. Innovations in the entertainment industry heralded the Golden Age of Radio and resulted in the replacement of vaudeville with cinema as "talkies" replaced silent films and movies came alive with color. The most iconic image of the era was the flapper--a thoroughly modern, young woman, unafraid to flout the social norms of her parents' generation and break with long-standing traditions. She typified the sexually expressive, modern, young, and fun woman who had gained the right to vote, and who was ready to take her rightful place in both the workforce and in the speakeasies that cropped up in the wake of Prohibition. Inside you will read about... ✓ The Booming Economy of the 1920s ✓ Babe Ruth, Jazz, Art Deco, and the Flapper ✓ Women's Rights, Civil Rights, and Gay Rights ✓ Politics and All That Jazz ✓ The Wall Street Crash of 1929 And much more!Along with the social changes for women, African-American cultural and artistic expressions ruled the day as jazz music emanated from the speakeasies and the radio. African-American literature rose to prominence, and all-black casts were featured in the popular theatrical productions. It was an era of progressive change fueled by a sustained economic prosperity that seemed to have no end. It did come to an abrupt end, though, with the Wall Street Crash of 1929. The music stopped, the flapper faded, and the roar of prosperity was silenced. The impact of that golden era, however, still reverberates throughout the modern day. This book tells the compelling story of this raucous period in history in succinct, yet informative detail that is both educational and entertaining.

One of the most dynamic eras in American history—the 1920s—began with this watershed year that would set the tone for the century to follow. "The Roaring Twenties” is the only decade in American history with a widely applied nickname, and our collective fascination with this era continues. But how did this surge of innovation and cultural milestones emerge out of the ashes of The Great War? No one has yet written a book about the decade’s beginning. Acclaimed author Eric Burns investigates the year of 1920, which was not only a crucial twelve-month period of its own, but one that foretold the future, foreshadowing the rest of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st, whether it was Sacco and Vanzetti or the stock market crash that brought this era to a close. Burns sets the record straight about this most misunderstood and iconic of periods. Despite being the first full year of armistice, 1920 was not, in fact, a peaceful time—it contained the greatest act of terrorism in American history to date. And while 1920 is thought of as starting a prosperous era, for most people, life had never been more unaffordable. Meanwhile, African Americans were putting their stamp on culture and though people today imagine the frivolous image of the flapper dancing the night away, the truth was that a new kind of power had been bestowed on women, and it had nothing to do with the dance floor. . . From prohibition to immigration, the birth of jazz, the rise of expatriate literature, and the original Ponzi scheme, 1920 was truly a year like no other.
