The monograph presents the Meaning-Text approach applied to the domain of syntax from a typological angle; it deals with several long-standing syntactic problems on the basis of a dependency description. Its content can be presented in five parts + an Introduction: The Introduction explains the architecture of the book and sketches the Meaning-Text linguis-tic model, underlying the subsequent discussion. I. Surface-syntactic relations in the languages of the world, with special studies of subjects and objects. II. Grammatical voice in the dependency framework: the “passive” construction in Chinese. III. The relative clause: a calculus and analysis of possible types; the pseudo-relative (“headless”) clause. IV. Binary conjunctions (such as IF ..., THEN ...), free indefinite pronouns ([He went] nobody knows where), and syntactic idioms. V. Word order: linearization of dependency structures. The monograph offers a new perspective in syntactic studies. It is strongly typology-oriented (using the data from typologically diverse languages: English, Russian, Chinese, Korean, Basque, Georgian, etc.) and based on a system of rigorous definitions of the notions involved, which ensures a link with computational linguistics and Natural Language Processing

Clitics, those “funny little words” like English contracted future tense and pluperfect tense/conditional mood markers (’ll and ’d) or French pronominal objects (le ‘him’, la ‘her’, lui ‘to him/her’, etc.), have long been a source of fascination for linguists. Lacking an inherent stress that characterizes “well-behaved” words, clitics prosodically depend on a stressed sentence element, called their host, which makes them look and, in some contexts, behave like affixes (parts of words). Some clitics, Serbian second-position clitics being the case in point, also obey stringent linear ordering rules, different from those holding for fully-fledged sentence elements. This monograph offers a comprehensive formalized description of second-position clitics in standard Serbian from the viewpoint of the Meaning-Text theory, an approach relying on syntactic dependencies and oriented towards speech production, which sets it apart from most contemporary frameworks. It will be of interest for general linguists, Slavists, and advanced learners of Serbian.

Constructions With Lexical Repetitions In East Slavic written by Mikhail Kopotev and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-07-01 with Foreign Language Study categories.
Repetition is a well-studied phenomenon in morphology and lexicology but has received less attention on the syntactic level. The book sheds light on syntactic constructions with lexical repetition in East Slavic languages. Several contributions address syntactic constructions that have developed in form and meaning in accordance with general tendencies found in many languages, for example, English Boys will be boys. However, most chapters focus on constructions that resist typological explanation, for example Rus. Беда так беда ‘trouble- nom.sg so trouble- nom.sg’, Ukr. дурень дурнем ‘fool- nom.sg fool- ins.sg’. .

In Ten Lectures on Event Structure in a Network Theory of Language, Nikolas Gisborne explores verb meaning. He discusses theories of events and how a network model of language-in-the-mind should be theorized; what the lexicon is; how to probe word meaning; evidence for structure in word meaning; polysemy; the lexical semantics of causation; a type hierarchy of events; and event types cross-linguistically. He also looks at the relationship between different classes of events or event types and aktionsarten; transitivity alternations and argument linking. Gisborne argues that the social and cognitive embedding of language, requires a view of linguistic structure as a network where even the analysis of verb meaning can require an understanding of the role of speaker and hearer.

Dependencies – directed labeled graph structures representing hierarchical relations between morphemes, words, and semantic units – are the standard representation in many fields of computational linguistics. The linguistic significance of these structures often remains vague, however, and those working in the field stress the need for the development of a common notational and formal basis. Although dependency analysis has become quasi-hegemonic in Natural Language Processing (NLP), the connection between computational linguistics and dependency linguists remains sporadic. But theoretical dependency linguists and computational linguists have much to share. This book presents papers from the International Conference on Dependency Linguistics (Depling 2011) held in Barcelona, Spain, in September 2011. Beginning with what may be the first formal definition of dependency structure, the book continues with papers covering subjects such as: the interface of the syntactic structures with semantics; mapping semantic structures to text surface by means of statistical language generation; formalization of dependency; advances in dependency parsing; and the link between statistical and rule-based dependency parsing. This comprehensive collection gives a coherent overview of recent advances in the interplay of linguistics and natural language engineering around dependency grammars, ranging from definitional challenges of syntactic functions to formal grammars, tree bank development, and parsing issues

Managing Software Supply Chains written by Ying Wang and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-26 with Computers categories.
Open-source software supply chains wield significant influence in the software industry, drawing substantial interest from enterprises, researchers, and policymakers. Leveraging third-party libraries to build software applications is a common practice aimed at cost savings and software quality enhancement. However, heavy reliance on external libraries often leads to a state of “dependency hell”, marked by issues like incompatibilities, conflicting versions, bloated dependencies, and the inclusion of vulnerable library versions. Despite extensive research on software dependency management and the evolution of software supply chains, questions linger regarding the variances in dependency challenges across programming language ecosystems and how best to address the dependency hell phenomenon from an ecosystem-wide perspective. The aim of this book is to offer: (1) a comprehensive literature review on software supply chains, (2) discussions on modeling software supply chains and analyzing their evolutionary behaviors, (3) ecosystem-level strategies for diagnosing various dependency issues and automating problem resolution with cost-benefit analysis, and (4) provision of a toolkit and datasets to support future research and assist practitioners in addressing the challenges of dependency management. The methodologies outlined in this book have been previously presented in top-tier conferences and journals, with some techniques officially integrated into products by Microsoft Corporation and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd. This book is designed to provide readers with a solid understanding of software supply chain fundamentals and practical guidance on implementing theory and techniques in real-world industrial settings. The book is chiefly intended for software engineering researchers and students with an academic background who are interested in learning about dependency management for third-party libraries, quality assurance for software supply chains, and the evolution of open-source software ecosystems. It will also be of interest to practitioners, including software engineers, quality assurance professionals, and software managers, as well as general readers. All will benefit from our systematic studies on the dependency hell phenomenon in various programming language communities and valuable associated artifacts.
