I'm older than both but younger than their combined ages. I've never been to Finland, but have roamed the streets of Manila. In 1989, I traveled 8453.9 miles to Boston for the proverbial American Dream. I was 22, hired as an entry level Registered Nurse for a Rehabilitation Hospital. I relished my adventures in New England. Life is good. Cupid shot love arrows and in January 11, 1991, after a year of dating, Joseph and I became man and wife. We were blessed with Jessica, bought a home and then Gino came along. I've worked the chain of command, from staff, charge, Supervisor to Director of Quality Improvement. I've participated in a Medical Mission, published articles, sold 2 oil paintings, written songs, and even taken a course at Harvard. Life is great! Two more blessings followed; Lilly then Max. We've moved to a bigger home. We traveled for various charitable activities and cultural events. Annually, our family volunteers at the Lowell Folk Festival. I am part- teaching at a Community College (Clinical Instructor), part - editing as Publishing Director for a monthly newsmagazine and part- acting, landing a gig in a Sandra Bullock movie, The Proposal. Life is grand! Yet, I search for more. As I turn older one December, obtaining a Master's degree seems a logical step. Education is another ticket to help change the world, an action to be remembered. Ben Franklin said, "If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth writing." There is only one known image of Lucy Higgs Nichols, a Civil War nurse who escaped slavery. In this captivating photograph dated to 1898, the elderly Lucy is the sole female and the only person of color. She stands stately in the middle of a large group of war veterans at a reunion that she diligently attended every year. Some of these soldiers were from the Indiana 23rd Regiment, the men who fiercely advocated for her Civil War nurse's pension in the 1890s. Her story is remarkable--a journey from enslavement in Tennessee, to freedom and service among the ranks of the Union Army, and finally to independence and national recognition from the press, the Grand Army of the Republic, and even Congress. Despite considerable obstacles and unimaginable pain, Lucy achieved notoriety, nobility, and self-sufficiency in a post-Civil War era that often denied black Americans and women justice and opportunity.

Moral Awareness In Greek Tragedy written by Stuart Lawrence and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-03 with History categories.

Lawrence's volume provides a detailed discussion and analyses of the moral awareness of major characters in Greek tragedy, focusing particularly on the characters' recognition of moral issues and crises, their ability to reflect on them, and their consciousness of doing so. Beginning with a definition of morality and examining the implications of analysing the moral performance of fictional characters, Lawrence considers concepts of the self and the problem of autonomy and personal responsibility in the context of divine intervention, which is a crucial feature of the genre. The volume then moves on to the individual plays (Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes and Oresteia; Sophocles' Ajax, Trachiniae, Oedipus Tyrannus, Electra, and Philoctetes; and Euripides' Medea, Hecuba, Hippolytus, Heracles, Electra, and Bacchae), focusing in each case on a crisis or crises faced by a major character and examining the background which led to it. Lawrence then considers the individual character's moral response and relates it to the critical issues formulated in the volume's opening discussions. The book will be important to any student of Classical Studies and those in Philosophy or Literature interested in a theoretical discussion of the morality of literary characters.

New York City, 1929. A sanatorium, a deadly disease, and a dire nurse shortage. So begins the remarkable true story of the Black nurses who helped cure tuberculosis, one of the world's deadliest plagues, told alongside the often strange chronicle of the cure's discovery. During those dark pre-antibiotic days, when tuberculosis killed 1 in 7 people, white nurses at Sea View, New York's largest municipal hospital, began quitting. Desperate to avert a public health crisis, city officials summoned Black southern nurses, luring them with promises of good pay, a career, and an escape from the strictures of Jim Crow. But after arriving, they found themselves on an isolated hilltop in the remote borough of Staten Island, yet again confronting racism and consigned to a woefully understaffed facility, dubbed 'the pest house' where 'no one left alive'. Spanning the Great Depression and moving through World War II and beyond, this story follows the intrepid young women, the 'Black Angels', who, for twenty years, risked their lives working under dreadful conditions while caring for the city's poorest - 1,800 souls languishing in wards, waiting to die or become 'guinea pigs' for experimental (often deadly) drugs. Yet despite their major role in desegregating the NYC hospital system - and vital work in the race for the cure for tuberculosis and subsequently helping to find it at Sea View - these nurses were completely erased from history. The Black Angels recovers the voices of these extraordinary women and puts them at the centre of this riveting story celebrating their legacy and spirit of survival.
