In the name of music and self-identity, the speaker weaves their way through fault and how it amends Black life in America. This is demonstrated best in how the demanding, yet vulnerable tone for the collection is set in "Men Like Me," its restless opening poem. Here, we find the speaker reciting a chronicle of generational neglect from men that became him also. Earnest and sharp, there is a beauty in seeing a poet not shy away from both the melancholy and resolve of rescripting their path while cherishing their steps and missteps along the way. This collection is a panel aching of fathers, sons, uncles, grandfathers, all of whom would do well to join in and confront shared privileges that are typically curtailed or altogether avoided in conversation. The term “tender-headed” is a colloquialism used in the African-American community. Caring for ethnic hair is a unique and interesting process that brings forth a lot of debate and conversation. We share many familiar experiences and expressions. For instance, when the term “kitchen” is used in reference to doing African-American hair, we who have endured the hair styling routines of our heritage may remember that word being used to describe the thick hair at the nape of the neck. One thing is for sure, “tender-headed-ness” is one of those things that is common ground for many multi-cultural people. What's even more fascinating is that a multitude of brown girls like the characters in this book can share in this experience of getting their tangles untangled, under the skillful and quick fingers of their mothers, grandmothers or aunties, who have probably also gone through this same process themselves, when they were once little brown girls too. For many multi-cultural girls and boys, being “tender-headed” is a cultural trait and getting those tangles untangled is an often times uncomfortable but bearable rite of passage that many of us have gone through. Because of its unique texture, there are some challenges to getting their hair styled. It isn't always pleasant, but it certainly is memorable.

In her solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society in 2017, Tenderheaded, Jennifer Packer established herself as one of the most compelling painters of her generation. The exhibition, a selection of portraits and paintings of funerary bouquets, based in observation, improvisation and memory, rigorously engaged with art history at the same time as it maintained a personal response to how black bodies navigate within the present political landscape. Packer's portraiture foregrounds the autonomy and integrity of her sitting subjects, embodying questions of representation, visibility, and desire. Her paintings of funerary bouquets, meanwhile, provide a personal space in which to address themes of trauma and loss. Packer, whose practice is marked by both its restraint and tenderness, favors the emotive capacity of painting as a form of resistance to fixed identity. Every poem, Robert Frost declared, "is an epitome of the great predicament, a figure of the will braving alien entanglements". This study considers what Frost meant by those entanglements, how he braved them in his poetry, and how he invited his readers to do the same. In the process it contributes significantly to a new critical awareness of Frost as a complex artist who anticipated postmodernism--a poet who invoked literary traditions and conventions frequently to set himself in tension with them. Using the insights of reader-response theory, Judith Oster explains how Frost appeals to readers with his apparent accessibility and then, because of the openness of his poetry's possibilities, engages them in the process of constructing meaning. Frost's poems, she demonstrates, teach the reader how they should be read; at the same time, they resist closure and definitive reading. The reader's acts of encountering and constructing the poems parallel Frost's own encounters and acts of construction. Commenting at length on a number of individual poems, Oster ranges in her discussion from the ways in which the poet dramatizes the inadequacy of the self alone to the manner in which he "reads" the Book of Genesis or the writing of Emerson. Oster illuminates, finally, the central conflict in Frost: his need to be read well against his fear of being read; his need to share his creation against his fear of its appropriation by others.
