For most of my life, the word mother had been a doubled-edged sword. When I was nine years old, my mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia. This monster of a disease robbed my family of their mother and my mother of her family. Many years later, when I married at age twenty-three, I started an unexpected and deeply painful journey through infertility. I found myself in a place where few could ever begin to understand my pain and loss. As I struggled to have a family of my own, I began to reflect back on the loss of my own mother to mental illness. This book is dedicated to my mother, Susan. In writing this, I hope to share the tragic yet beautiful story of her life and to shed some light on the devastating effects schizophrenia has on families.

The Tao Of Islam written by Sachiko Murata and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-03-23 with Religion categories.

The Tao of Islam is a rich and diverse anthology of Islamic teachings on the nature of the relationships between God and the world, the world and the human being, and the human being and God. Focusing on gender symbolism, Sachiko Murata shows that Muslim authors frequently analyze the divine reality and its connections with the cosmic and human domains with a view toward a complementarity or polarity of principles that is analogous to the Chinese idea of yin/yang. Murata believes that the unity of Islamic thought is found, not so much in the ideas discussed, as in the types of relationships that are set up among realities. She pays particular attention to the views of various figures commonly known as "Sufis" and "philosophers," since they approach these topics with a flexibility and subtlety not found in other schools of thought. She translates several hundred pages, most for the first time, from more than thirty important Muslims including the Ikhwan al-Safa', Avicenna, and Ibn al-'Arabi.

Aharon David Gordon (1856--1922) is increasingly being recognized as the first Jewish environmentalist. Long before global warming became a major threat, Gordon warned against the mounting dangers of human assault on nature and urged us to open ourselves to nature and re-attune with it. The First Jewish Environmentalist introduces Gordon's ideas and sets them in their historical context, shedding new light on the interconnections between religion, culture, education, and the environment. The book expands Gordon's canonical status beyond the realm of Hebrew culture, and extracts from Gordon's philosophy empowerment and inspiration for seekers advocating the protection of our planet.

Women In European Culture And Society written by Deborah Simonton and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-19 with History categories.

Women in European Culture and Society: A Sourcebook includes a range of transnational sources which encompass the history of women in Europe from the beginning of the eighteenth century right up to the present day. Including documents from across Europe, from France and Germany to Estonia, Spain and Russia, organized in a broad chronological spread, the diversity of the sources included in the book is unique – including many never translated into English before. Deborah Simonton offers detailed interpretive introductions that analyse and contextualize the sources. A central feature is its exploration of how women operated within gendered worlds and used their skills and abilities to shape and claim their own identities and to engage with how they contributed as practitioners to shaping European culture and society. With over 200 sources, the book allows us to ‘hear’ women’s voices as they articulate their understandings of their worlds and helps capture a sense of women’s motivations, options and choices as they understood them - allowing readers to focus on either a period or a theme and providing a comparative resource. Ideal for use on its own or as a companion volume to Simonton’s other major work, Women in European Culture and Society: Gender, Skill and Identity since 1700, this sourcebook is an invaluable collection offering vivid first-hand accounts of women’s lives.
