Tennis smashed onto the worldwide athletic scene soon after its modern rules and equipment were introduced in nineteenth-century England. Exciting, competitive, and uniquely accessible to people of all ages and talent levels, tennis continues to enjoy popularity, both as a recreational activity and a spectator sport. Life imitates sport in Tennis and Philosophy. Editor David Baggett approaches tennis not only as a game but also as a surprisingly rich resource for philosophical analysis. He assembles a team of champion scholars, including David Foster Wallace, Robert R. Clewis, David Detmer, Mark Huston, Tommy Valentini, Neil Delaney, and Kevin Kinghorn, to consider numerous philosophical issues within the sport. Profiles of tennis greats such as John McEnroe, Roger Federer, the Williams sisters, and Arthur Ashe are paired with pertinent topics, from the ethics of rage to the role of rivalry. Whether entertaining metaphysical arguments or examining the nature of beauty, these essays promise insightful discussion of one of the world's most popular sports.

LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK AWARD 2013 To spin or not to spin? – that is the metaphysical question. When a mortifying defeat to his teenage son rekindles his lifelong passion for table tennis, keen philosopher Guido Mina di Sospiro sets out to learn the game properly. Guido’s love for spinning a feather-weight ball takes him from his local ping-pong club, populated by idiosyncratic players with extraordinary stories to tell, to training drills with a world-class coach. This seemingly harmless game also leads him into sticky situations in the CIA headquarters and the ganglands of Washington, D.C. Woven throughout his ping-pong epiphany are philosophical ruminations on Plato and Aristotle, metaphysicians and empiricists, Jung’s dark shadow, Sun Tzu’s war tactics, the I Ching, and much more. As Guido’s journey takes him from Big Sur to a nail-biting showdown in China against a string of elite players, he finds ping-pong can teach us a surprising amount about life.

Knowing The Score written by David Papineau and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-04 with Sports & Recreation categories.

'A tour de force that provides fresh insight not only into the nature of sport, but cooperation, the mind, altruism, teamwork, leadership, tribalism and ritualism. It's a book that every sports fan should read, and every sports writer should absorb' Matthew Syed 'David Papineau's book is an important contribution to our thinking about sports, society, psychology, and moral philosophy. But it is also much more than that. Gripping from start to finish, it is a terrific read full of humour and good sense. You don't even have to like sports to enjoy it' Ian Buruma Why do sports competitors choke? How can Roger Federer select which shot to play in 400 milliseconds? Should foreign-born footballers be eligible to play for England? Why do opposing professional cyclists help each other? Why do American and European golfers hate each other? Why does test cricket run in families? Why is punching tolerated in rugby but not in soccer? These may not look like philosophical questions, but David Papineau shows that under the surface they all raise long-standing philosophical issues. To get to the bottom of these and other sporting puzzles, we need help from metaphysics or ethics, or from the philosophy of mind or political philosophy, as well as numerous other philosophical disciplines. Knowing the Score will be an entertaining, fact-filled and erudite book that ranges far and wide through the sporting world. As a prominent philosopher who is also an enthusiastic amateur sportsman and omnivorous sports fan, David Papineau is uniquely well-placed to show how philosophy can illuminate sporting issues. By bringing his philosophical expertise to bear, he will add a new dimension to the way we think about sport.

In a world gone mad, a world riddled with controversy - fanatical parents, crazy coaches, violent athletes, there appears little wisdom. Into this dire situation comes Noble Tennis: The Wisdom of Sport, a book that introduces philosophy as the missing, key ingredient in sport. A humanistic philosophy leads to nobleness as fun and games become the source of life-enhancing qualities.Noble Tennis: The Wisdom of Sport is a sane reminder of the joy of enthusiasm, the pure love of the game, from which the great qualities of serenity, patience, concentration and fearlessness flow. In the book, each of these qualities is explored and, with the help of the many "hints and tips, " the benefits of implementing them revealed. These benefits apply equally on and off the court. Players find that the qualities are transferable to all of life, and playing "in the Zone" is easy when the noble qualities are expressed.

The Tennis Manifesto written by Warren Harris and has been published by Bookbaby this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-19 with Sports & Recreation categories.

The Tennis Manifesto is a tennis coaching philosophy and motivational phrases and ideas written in quirky, avant-garde, and sometimes dark, abstract ways, and laced with off-beat, whimsical, dynamic, mind-twisting illustrations. The Tennis Manifestouses wrong punctuation and mostly strange and old typewriter fonts. Words that are kind-of thrown on a page, sometimes not many words on a page. Sometimes words are spelled wrong. It gives the reader the impression of some deep-thinking, but eccentric tennis coach, or the crazy homeless guy living under the freeway psycho-babbling all this tennis stuff. A fun and trippy book to own and read. It is not a tennis lesson in a book. It is motivational and inspiring concepts, cryptically funny, and sprinkled with hype-phrases, and abstract, short, one-page stories that make for an intriguing read even if you are not a tennis player. Tennis drives the book, but I feel it bursts out of the traditional "sports book genre square."
