This comprehensive biography of Tiger Woods looks at where he came from, his sports accomplishments and philanthropic efforts, and the effect he has had on sports history, marketing, and broadcasting. Tiger Woods: A Biography, Second Edition updates the 2005 edition to examine the life and career of this phenomenal athlete through the 2009 PGA Championship. The book provides information about Woods's parents and his upbringing, early life, and outstanding accomplishments as a professional golfer. It also covers Tiger's philanthropic activities including the Tiger Woods Foundation, a global organization that provides innovative educational opportunities to youth, the Tiger Woods Learning Center, and the Earl Woods Scholarship Program established to honor the spirit and vision of Tiger's father. Recognizing that the opportunities Woods has had were hard won by early African American golfers—who were denied the right to play on the PGA Tour until 1961—the book also includes a chapter on these pioneers. The volume is rounded out with a brief history of broadcasting and sports, as well as a look at the relationship between athletes and sponsors.

Martial arts carries as integral components time-honored principles of personal mastery and athletic performance. Tennis, the sport for a lifetime, has much to learn from accepting and adhering to basic martial arts fundamentals, not only physically and technically but also personally, emotionally, and psychologically. Examining martial arts sheds light on common denominators of athletic performance, which transfer and apply to every sport. An athlete cannot fulfill his potential without focusing on the full panoply of fundamentals: physically tangible and the psychologically and emotionally intangible. Mastering tennis requires completely committing to each and every fundamental, including those that improve attitude and learning skills. Mastering each fundamental represents a journey into improvement and excellence not only for tennis and martial arts as specific disciplines but also for overall personal fulfillment and mastery in life. Embrace a learning mind-set and look for the opportunity to learn from everything. Learn purposefully and with discipline. Stay in the present and focus on what is happening now. Dispense with your ego and go with the flow, fearing nothing. Stay calm and relaxed as the moment is the only thing. Feel yin and yang, flow and force. Breathe fully, relaxing in the present without the self, without fear, and with the mind and body as one. Be ready. Look to the greatest threat. Move from the ground, staying balanced. Set up, and use the earths power to stroke from the ground, driving and rotating through the legs, hips, core, shoulders, arm, and racket. Mastering these fundamentals unlocks the power of action, unleashing the fulfilling power of the self. Paradoxically, dispensing with the selfs ego leads to self-actualization and fulfillment. Learn and master these fundamentals and youll not only become a much better tennis player; youll become a better learner, performer, and athlete. Much more importantly, youll become a better person.

From The Sidelines To The Headlines written by Betsy Gerhardt Pasley and has been published by Trinity University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-07 with Sports & Recreation categories.

In spring 2014 Peggy Kokernot Kaplan, a former Trinity University athlete and cofounder of the women’s track team, emailed her alma mater’s athletic department asking the school to post statistics from the team’s 1975 season. It’s no surprise that they couldn’t fulfill her request, for Trinity had sparse records from the 1970s—not just for track and field but for most performances by female athletes before 1991, when the school joined a NCAA Division III conference. What started as a humble email request nearly a decade ago has culminated in From the Sidelines to the Headlines: The Legacy of Women's Sports at Trinity University, an expansive book aimed at filling in the gaps in coverage of half a century of women’s intercollegiate sports. Former Trinity athlete Betsy Gerhardt Pasley and historian Doug Brackenridge, along with other members of the Trinity community, have collected hundreds of long-forgotten documents and conducted dozens of interviews with former students, coaches, and administrators to tell the fascinating, multifaceted story of women’s sports at this liberal arts school in San Antonio, Texas. While the book focuses primarily on the post–Title IX years between 1972 and 1999, its scope extends to Trinity’s founding in 1869, illuminating the century-long evolution of women in competitive sports, at Trinity and elsewhere, before Title IX. The story, told alongside the cultural shifts that formed the social and athletic context for female athletes of the day, also documents the decision Trinity and other institutions of higher learning faced after Title IX: Should they adhere to a commercial model, in which a focus on athletics often overshadowed academics, or strive for a more balanced student-athlete, nonscholarship model? Trinity chose the latter and has decades of national championships and academic accolades to show for it.

Record-breaking media sensation Tiger Woods has moved beyond the fairway to take the world by storm. After becoming the first golfer in history to win three straight U.S. Amateur titles, his win at the 1997 Masters Tournament gave him a permanent place in the record book: youngest player to win, lowest score ever, and first African-American player to win. In Tiger, John Strege, golf writer and longtime friend with unparalled access to Woods and his family, takes us behind the scenes of this incredible life--from the time Tiger picked up a golf club at age nine months, to his first hole in one at age six, to his unprecedented domination of junior, amateur, and now high-stakes professional golf. Packed with personal anecdotes from family, friends, teammates, and coaches, as well as what it's like to play on a course with Tiger from golf greats such as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, Tiger provides a riveting shot-by-shot account of Woods's life up through the 1997 season. It details the unshakable relationship with his parents, the racial issues that have surrounded him, and the string of almost mythical successes that have carried him all the way to Niketown. A role model for young and old alike, Tiger Woods and his story will capture the minds and hearts of sports fans everywhere.
