Looking at the fashion of tennis is like opening a window into culture and society. Tennis is the second most popular sport in the West, and over the last century it has become, more than any other, an important poart of our society and culture. The remarkable impact of tennis is apparent in the record number of fans and spectators the sport has attracted in the thirty years since major tournaments have been broadcast live on radio and TV. As tennis comes of age with yet another museum devoted to it in Paris (inaugurated at Roland-Garros during the May 2003 championship), this journey through the history of tennis fashions sheds new light on the top sporting events of the 20th century, on the lifestyles that tennis brought into being and turns the spotlight on the most charismatic champions and the way they have influenced the fashions of their time. 60 illustrations

Paris has been the international capital of fashion for more than 300 years. Even before the rise of the haute couture, Parisians were notorious for their obsession with fashion, and foreigners eagerly followed their lead. From Charles Frederick Worth to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent, fashion history is dominated by the names of Parisian couturiers. But Valerie Steele's Paris Fashion is much more than just a history of great designers. This fascinating book demonstrates that the success of Paris ultimately rests on the strength of its fashion culture – created by a host of fashion performers and spectators, including actresses, dandies, milliners, artists, and writers. First published in 1988 to great international acclaim, this pioneering book has now been completely revised and brought up to date, encompassing the rise of fashion's multiple world cities in the 21st century. Lavishly illustrated, deeply learned, and elegantly written, Valerie Steele's masterwork explores with brilliance and flair why Paris remains the capital of fashion.

This book is a photographic celebration of early lawn tennis, Lawn tennis in the 19th Century was essentially a game played by the upper social classes, although some homeowners of moderate income did build tennis courts on their property. Courts at the large country manors and estates were established on or near the croquet lawns and often provided a reasonable surface for play. The courts of lesser houses often were sloped, had uneven surfaces and included hazards such as boulders, shrubbery and trees. Players would wear their ordinary every-day clothes to play a game. The photographs in this book show a game very different from that of today. We will look into the faces of these departed people and enter the sunny landscapes of their distant years. Enjoy your journey back through time.
