'Fred Brophy is a legend - he's one of my favourite real Australians.' John Williamson Son of a sideshow operator and a trapeze artist, Fred Brophy grew up on the road, travelling the length and breadth of Australia. He did time in jail as a teenager before touring his own boxing tent at a time when the tradition was alive and well. With plenty of hardship, adventure, hilarity, tragedy and even a romance, Fred's story is one of living on the smell of an oily rag and staying resourceful to keep his young family together and give his kids the education he didn't have. This is both a snapshot of a fast-disappearing Australia and an inspiring tale of pulling yourself up by the bootstraps. A big-hearted, no-nonsense man who doesn't waste words, Fred uses his tent boxing - the last of its kind on the world - to both entertain and to help troubled youth and battlers. He was awarded an OAM in 2010 for services to charity, boxing and entertainment.

Tent boxing was born in late 19th century England. Boxing troupes of professional fighters would travel the mining towns and rural areas, following fairs and carnivals, putting up big top tents and taking on all comers for cash in the ring. The Fred Brophy Boxing Troupe is the last remaining touring boxing troupe (or tent) in Australia and the world. Its manager, fourth-generation showman Fred Brophy has been running it since the 1970s, though it now only operates in Queensland as tent boxing has been banned elsewhere. The photographs in this book record the troupe's visit to Rockhampton, Queensland, in June 2008.

Then great personal tragedy visits Archie and the troupe. This story is the result of a remarkable new discovery in Australian history, a true story about how Jimmy Sharman navigated his Boxing Troupe throughout the First World War despite; the war fervour, the conscription debate, pressure to enlist, accusations of cowardice and the tragic loss of so many to the war itself. Strange Country written by Mark Dapin and has been published by Pan Australia this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-01 with Travel categories.

"This book is about the people I met as I crisscrossed Australia by train and plane and L-plated car: the undefeated dreamers and wild-hearted romantics, the obsessed hobbyists and beautiful failures. It is about heroes and legends, illusions, delusions and hope, and one or two men with shit for brains who ought to be locked up." As anyone who's ever read Mark Dapin's column and features in Good Weekend knows, he's an immensely funny, acute and vivid observer of Australian life. In Strange Country, he takes us on a journey through a very different Australia - a country that's eccentric, puzzling, big-hearted, small-minded, nostalgic and sometimes just plain mad. From the last travelling boxing tent to feral urban sewer rats to Vietnam Veteran bikies and the annual Parkes Elvis Festival, his writing illuminates the stranger side of Australian life in a travel book like no other.
