Peran profesi kesehatan dalam memberikan asuhan komprehensif pada bayi risiko tinggi yaitu bayi prematur hendaknya menyadari pentingnya keberadaan keluarga untuk terlibat secara aktif dan bekerja sama dengan petugas kesehatan. Keterlibatan keluarga khususnya orangtua dalam perawatan bayi prematur perlu dimaksimalkan melalui proses promosi kesehatan dan pemberdayaan (family empowerment). Model promosi kesehatan dan penerapan riset terkini diharapkan mampu mengupayakan dalam proses transfer informasi dan meningkatkan keterampilan orangtua. Hal ini bertujuan agar terjadi proses belajar pada orangtua, sehingga dapat meneruskan peran dan tugasnya dengan optimal dalam merawat bayinya pascaperawatan RS. Profesi kesehatan sebagai pemberi pelayanan memiliki peran dan tanggung jawab sebagai pemberi asuhan, advokat, konselor, edukator, kolaborator, dan agen pembaharu terhadap manajemen asuhan yang diberikan pada klien dan keluarga. Profesi kesehatan baik dokter, perawat, bidan, gizi ataupun farmasi diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kualitas hidup bayi selama proses perawatan di rumah sakit, bagaimana memfasilitasi orangtua untuk memberikan bonding attachment dan mengoptimalkan discharge planning melalui pemberian pendidikan kesehatan. Dalam menjalankan peran dan tanggung jawabnya, profesi kesehatan harus mendasari dengan teori promosi kesehatan dan riset sebagai kerangka kerja asuhan pada klien dan keluarga. Salah satu teori promosi kesehatan yang dapat diaplikasikan sebagai dasar pemberi asuhan adalah teori konsevasi Myra E. Levine. Levine dalam teorinya didasari oleh konsep wholeness (keseluruhan), konservasi, dan adaptasi. Tujuan konservasi adalah kesehatan dan kekuatan untuk menghadapi ketidakmampuan. Konservasi berfokus pada keseimbangan antara suplai dan kebutuhan energi yang meliputi: konservasi energi, integritas struktural, integritas personal, dan integritas sosial.
