Movidas por la imperiosa necesidad de dotarse de recursos hídricos, todas las sociedades buscan contar con la cantidad necesaria y en las mejores condiciones posibles, a la vez que manifiestan una particular relación con el agua. Cada una la percibe y la siente en función de su organización, su sistema de creencias y sus pautas culturales. Eso es lo que se estudia en este libro, cuyos autores han focalizado el análisis en los reinos ibéricos durante la Baja Edad Media. El agua en el imaginario medieval acerca al lector al lugar que ocupaba el agua en la cosmovisión de quienes vivieron en la Península Ibérica en aquellos siglos prestando atención a tres aspectos: las bases materiales de la percepción del agua, que explican el deseo de apropiarse de un bien necesario, fuente de poder y riqueza. El ámbito de las ideas y los sentimientos, que muestra una agua ennoblecedora y con doble faz, positiva y negativa, a la vez que una serie de estereotipos que se repiten ante ciertos acontecimientos. Por último, el mundo de las creencias, en el que el agua, sobre todo la bendita, pero no sólo ésta, es contemplada como elemento sanador, que limpia y que delimita la pertenencia o no a la comunidad de fieles.

Estas se enmarcan en el periodo de impulso a la normalización jurídica característico del siglo XIII en Europa Occidental ('Magna Carta', 'Espejo Sajón', 'Liber augustalis' e.a.). Coincidiendo con el 800 aniversario del nacimiento del Rey Sabio, el presente volumen (redactado principalmente en español con resúmenes detallados en inglés) reúne los estudios de especialistas internacionales que analizan los conceptos e instituciones políticos desarrollados en las 'Siete Partidas', así como sus medios de transmisión desde diferentes enfoques disciplinares como la historia del derecho, la historia del arte y la filología hispánica. The King of Castile, Alfonso X (1221–1284), commissioned the compilation of the 'Siete Partidas', a legal compendium that laid the foundations of an influential concept of monarchical government. It was part of a broader trend of legal standardization in thirteenth-century Western Europe ('Magna Carta', 'Saxon Mirror', 'Liber augustalis' etc.). Coinciding with the 800th anniversary of the birth of the Wise King, the present volume (written mainly in Spanish with detailed summaries in English) brings together the studies of international specialists who analyze the concepts and political institutions developed in the 'Siete Partidas', as well as their means of transmission, from the perspective of multiple disciplines, such as the history of law, the history of art and Hispanic philology.

There are several reasons why the chronicle is particularly suited as the topic of a yearbook. In the first place there is its ubiquity: all over Europe and throughout the Middle Ages chronicles were written, both in Latin and in the vernacular, and not only in Europe but also in the countries neighbouring on it, like those of the Arabic world. Secondly, all chronicles raise such questions as by whom, for whom, or for what purpose were they written, how do they reconstruct the past, what determined the choice of verse or prose, or what kind of literary influences are discernable in them. Finally, many chronicles have been beautifully illuminated, and the relation between text and image leads to a wholly different set of questions.The yearbook The Medieval Chronicle aims to provide a representative survey of the on-going research in the field of chronicle studies, illustrated by examples from specific chronicles from a wide variety of countries, periods and cultural backgrounds. This book is the first to compare Denmark and Portugal systematically in the High Middle Ages and demonstrates how the two countries became strong kingdoms and important powers internationally by their participation in the crusading movement. Communication in the Middle Ages was better developed than often assumed and institutions, ideas, and military technology was exchanged rapidly, meaning it was possible to coordinate great military expeditions across the geographical periphery of Western Europe. Both Denmark and Portugal were closely connected to the sea and developed strong fleets, at the entrance to the Baltic and in the Mediterranean Seas respectively. They also both had religious borders, to the pagan Wends and to the Muslims, that were pushed forward in almost continuous crusades throughout the centuries. Crusading at the Edges of Europe follows the major campaigns of the kings and crusaders in Denmark and Portugal and compares war-technology and crusading ideology, highlighting how the countries learned from each other and became organised for war.
