Teosinte began as a series of poems and then merged with the symbolism of Regina Szczypiorski's art. It is structured on the seven days and nights of the Mayan Underworld. A parallel story emerged with the author's diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in December 2010. This book is an honest account of one woman processing the system of cancer treatment in our country. It was written in the form of poetry and journals over a period of ten years, culminating with the assertion of a new myth; a myth that responds to the common theme of the phoenix across cultures and traditions; a myth that states the phoenix has landed, built her nest, burned and flew ... and now it's time to move forward. "After a less than ideal childhood and a difficult adult life, being hit with cancer did not make sense to me. I knew as soon as I was diagnosed I would write a book. My oldest son asked me if I thought about reading some self-help/survivor stories and I replied to him, 'No, I'm writing one.' That was Christmas Day 2010."

Teosinte, El Salvador was decimated during El Salvador’s civil war which lasted from 1980 to 1992. The United States supported the war by arming, funding and training the Salvadoran military, to combat what they perceived as a Communist threat. Most of the people who now live in Teosinte (which is about three hours northwest of San Salvador by car) met at a refugee camp in Honduras during the war and agreed to return to El Salvador together, despite the ongoing danger. Eventually, others joined them as they sought to rebuild the town. Teosinte is unusual though in that not only did refugees and civilians return to Teosinte but former guerillas and military soldiers joined them. This unlikely group of what now comprises roughly fifty families have, over the past twenty years, managed to work together as a community to determine their own future. In 1998, the town of Arlington, Massachusetts and Teosinte became sister cities through the National US-El Salvador Sister Cities Network. The relationship has grown over the years and now delegations from both towns visit each other to engage in a cultural exchange and to support each other through community involvement and support. This project communicates the past (the history of Teosinte, the war, etc.), the present (how people live and work now; how they work to rebuild their sense of society after a conflict), and the future (the hopes and dreams that the people of Teosinte have for their town and their children). NOTE: This book was created primarily for children (10-12 years old) as a support text to the curriculum "Learning from International Friendship: Bringing Teosinte to Our Schools."

Zea mays subsp. mays, from Spanish: maz after Taino: mahis[2]), often known as corn in North American and Australian English, is a cereal grain that was initially domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico approximately 10,000 years ago. Maize is a member of the Zea mays subsp. mays species.[3][4] The plant's leafy stalk gives rise to in"orescences, sometimes known as 5tassels,5 which produce pollen and separate ovuliferous in"orescences called ears. These in"orescences, when fertilized, yield kernels or seeds, which are considered botanical fruits.[6][I] Fn formal, scientiHc, and international usage, the term maize is favored as the common name since it refers solely to this one grain, whereas the term corn refers to any primary cereal crop that is farmed in a country. This preference for the term maize as the common name can be explained as follows. Wor instance, the term 5corn5 is typically used to refer to 5maize5 in both North America and Australia. Maize is utilized not 7ust for human consumption 8often in the form of masa), but also for the production of corn ethanol, animal feed, and other maize-based goods such as corn starch and corn syrup.[q] ...ent corn, "int corn, pod corn, popcorn, "our corn, and sweet corn are the six primary varieties of maize. Sweet corn is also known as popcorn.[9] The kernels of sugar-rich varieties of corn, known as sweet corn, are typically grown for human consumption, whereas Held corn varieties are typically used for animal feed, various corn-based human food uses 8such as grinding it into cornmeal or masa, pressing it into corn oil, fermenting and distilling it into alcoholic beverages like bourbon whiskey), and as feedstocks for the chemical industry. Sweet corn varieties are typically grown for human consumption as kernels. Fn addition, ethanol and various other types of biofuels can be made from maize.Maize is the most fre;uently farmed grain in the world, and each year, more maize is produced than any other type of grain combined.[U] The total amount of product produced all across the world in 2021 was 1.2 billion tonnes 81.2 10U long tonsP 1.3 10U short tons). Ft is estimated that in the year 2021, the Lnited States of America alone will produce 394 million tonnes 83q9,000,000 long tonsP 423,000,000 short tons) of maize. 1953 witnessed a breakthrough in biological science, the revelation of the double helical structure of DNA. Since the original revelation by James Watson and Francis Crick, knowledge of the structure and function of DNA has dramatically changed science and society. This volume explores the dramatic impact that this discovery has had on our lives. Beginning with the story of the discovery of the double helix, the collection looks at DNA fingerprinting and its impact on forensic and legal medicine; the extraction of ancient DNA from archaeological and palaeontological remains; the ethical implications arising from the genetic knowledge encoded in our DNA; the complex role of DNA in the cause, detection and treatment of cancer; the debates surrounding the potential commercialisation of genetically modified crops; the emotive field of reproductive medicine; and finally how the genetic basis of developmental language disorders is teaching us more about how humans communicate.
