Uma unidade de tratamento intensivo (UTI) ou unidade de cuidados intensivos (UCI) é uma estrutura hospitalar que se caracteriza como “unidade complexa dotada de sistema de monitorização contínua que admite pacientes potencialmente graves ou com descompensação de um ou mais sistemas orgânicos e que com o suporte e tratamento intensivos tenham possibilidade de se recuperar. A equipe da UTI conta com médicos intensivistas, médicos assistentes plantonistas com treinamento em medicina intensiva, além de enfermeiros, fisioterapeutas, farmacêuticos clínicos, fonoaudiólogos e equipe de suporte nutricional especializados em doenças graves e treinamento em ambientes de alta complexidade. Quando se trata do atendimento em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva, a preocupação no contexto de evolução médica e hospitalar se intensifica, tendo em vista que este setor hospitalar promove o cuidado a pacientes de alta complexidade e qualquer intervenção inadequada pode representar uma piora de quadro ou mesmo um óbito.
