Territorial approaches to forest governance reflect a shift away from plot level toward larger spatial scales in forest management, and away from exclusively public sector governance to multi-stakeholder governance that includes local communities, regional groups, national governments, private companies, civil society organizations and international bodies. Institutions associated with these different groups, and found at different spatial and administrative scales, have a direct impact on the effectiveness of forest management and governance. Most of the stakeholders have however difficulties in establishing effective forest governance mechanisms designed to territorial approches. It is crucial to enhance understanding of territorial approaches to forest governance to improve forest management and governance. More specifically, this publication aims to identify current practices, positive and negative lessons, and institutional options for effective forest governance at larger scales such as landscapes. It provides seven guiding principles and associated recommendations building on success factors identified in the case studies, overcoming challenges and reflecting on lessons learned. These guiding principles focus on strengthening institutions to better tackle the multiple scales of governance inherent to territorial approaches.

How should we think about politics in a world where ecological problems - from the deforestation of the Amazon to acid rain - transcend national boundaries? This is the timely and important question addressed by Thom Kuehls in Beyond Sovereign Territory. Contending that the sovereign territorial state is not adequate to contain or describe the boundaries of ecopolitics, the author reorients our thinking about government, nature, and politics. Kuehls argues that changes in technology and the scope of governmental aims have rendered conventional ecological and internationalist aims anachronistic - and ultimately ineffective - in the face of impending environmental collapse. He questions the process by which land is transformed into an object of sovereignty - into "territory" - demonstrating how representations of political space that are premised on territorial sovereignty fail to come to terms with much of what is involved in ecopolitics. Ultimately, Kuehls critiques an orientation that privileges a certain utilitarian relationship between humans and nonhuman nature, one in which the earth is largely interpreted as given to humans. The Mediterranean region has more than 25 million hectares of Mediterranean forests and about 50 million hectares of other Mediterranean wooded lands. They make crucial contributions to rural development, poverty alleviation, food security, as well as, the agricultural, water, tourism, and energy sectors. Changes in climate, societies, and lifestyles to create appropriate financial incentives and tools. in the Mediterranean region could have serious negative consequences for forests, with the potential to lead to the loss or diminution of those contributions and to a wide range of economic, social and environmental problems. In the future, Mediterranean forests will support agriculture and human wellbeing. Part 1: The Mediterranean landscape: importance and threats. Part 2: Mediterranean forest-based solutions. Forests and landscape restoration, adaptation of forests and adaptation using forests, climate change mitigation, and conserving biodiversity are additional and complementary approaches to address the drivers of forest degradation to the benefit of populations and the environment.
