Conrad S Western World written by Norman Sherry and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1971 with History categories.

Conrad's Western World traces the sources of Heart of Darkness, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and some of the short stories related to these novels. As in his highly acclaimed Conrad's Eastern World, Professor Sherry provides an interesting blend of biographical reconstruction and investigation into the originals of the main incidents and characters - Kurtz, Nostromo, Verloc and many of the minor figures as well. It has been possible to show in the study of Conrad's source material a movement away from analyses of personal experience or the narrated experiences of others to a manipulation of material entirely outside the bounds of his own experience. This change reveals also a movement in interest from personal and private dilemmas to wider and more public concerns, and shows Conrad developing a progressive sense of the frightening underside of human society. Finally, Professor Sherry considers the play of Conrad's mind over his source material and traces the development of individual works from the given sources to the completed fiction. This reconstruction of Conrad's original materials and the tracing of their development into literary works of great distinction gives us a unique insight into Conrad's preoccupations and art.

This critical anthology sets out to explore the boom that horror cinema and TV productions have experienced in Spain in the past two decades. It uses a range of critical and theoretical perspectives to examine a broad variety of films and filmmakers, such as works by Alejandro Amenábar, Álex de la Iglesia, Pedro Almodóvar, Guillermo del Toro, Juan Antonio Bayona, and Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. The volume revolves around a set of fundamental questions: What are the causes for this new Spanish horror-mania? What cultural anxieties and desires, ideological motives and practical interests may be behind such boom? Is there anything specifically "Spanish" about the Spanish horror film and TV productions, any distinctive traits different from Hollywood and other European models that may be associated to the particular political, social, economic or cultural circumstances of contemporary Spain?

Re-Making Sound is concise and flexible primer to sound studies. It takes students through six ways of conceptualizing sound and its links to other social phenomena: soundscapes; noise; sound and semiotics of the voice; sound and/through/in text; background sound/sound design; and sound art. Each chapter summarizes the history and scholarly theoretical underpinnings of these areas and concludes with a student activity that concretizes the historical and theoretical discussion via sound-making projects. With chapters designed to be flexible and non-sequential, the text fits within various course designs, and includes an introduction to key concepts in sound and sound studies, a cumulative concluding chapter with sound accompanying podcast exercise, and an extensive bibliography for students to pursue sound studies beyond the book itself.

The Routledge Companion to Folk Horror offers a comprehensive guide to this popular genre. It explores its origins, canonical texts and thinkers, the crucial underlying themes of nostalgia and hauntology, and identifies new trends in the field. Divided into five parts, the first focuses on the history of Folk Horror from medieval texts to the present day. It considers the first wave of contemporary Folk Horror through the films of the ‘unholy trinity’, as well as discussing the influence of ancient gods and early Folk Horror. Part 2 looks at the spaces, landscapes, and cultural relics, which form a central focus for Folk Horror. In Part 3, the contributors examine the rich history of the use of folklore in children’s fiction. The next part discusses recent examples of Folk Horror-infused music and image. Chapters consider the relationship between different genres of music to Folk Horror (such as folk music, black metal, and new wave), sound and performance, comic books, and the Dark Web. Often regarded as British in origin, the final part analyses texts which break this link, as the contributors reveal the larger realms of regional, national, international, and transnational Folk Horror. Featuring 40 contributions, this authoritative collection brings together leading voices in the field. It is an invaluable resource for students and scholars interested in this vibrant genre and its enduring influence on literature, film, music, and culture.

Poems Of Charles Alan Long written by Charles Alan Long and has been published by FriesenPress this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-16 with Poetry categories.

This book is a compilation of poems written by inspiration by Professor Emeritus Charles Alan Long, that reflect a long career of scholarship with many historical and lyrical expressions hidden by layers of research and teaching. A chronology of sorts, it begins in Dr. Long’s youth in college over sixty years ago, and continued until he was 80, as a teacher, professor of research, museum director, soldier, with success in bio-mathematics, natural history, as a philosopher, critic, and member of a progressive family. Some current, practical problems studied from the vantage of evolutionist, ecologist, biblical critic, naturalist, and offended American include the sudden rise of marijuana, political rhetoric, usury beyond decency, and by liberals and conservatives alike the erosion of personal liberty, especially of speech and universities. But the poems, from laments, to loves, to joy, to pathos and death, poverty to wealth, nature, art, music, and poetry itself are presented in almost musical sadness or joy. The history of an intellectual’s scholarly travels, whereas some poems are for children, some for society, some attacking evils, some praising good people, with merit even in deference to religions, many nations, and his beloved homeland. The poems are in large part visits into nostalgia and sentiment. Cultures of many peoples in many nations are described, as are many situations in America. There is, of course, an American core, but surely this poet loves good peoples and the history of Greece, France, Scotland, Africa, Russia, and other places. Loves genuine for many women inspired many lovely poems, a lot of romance. But profound in its argument is love for the poor and unhappy people, love for art, nature, philosophy, even sports, science and math, even religions. It becomes unified by reason, his active caring, and his bursts of singing. Much attention is given to geography, history, science and nature.
