When Bengal Lancers Major Iain Hadleigh first encounters the beautiful young Brucena Nairn it is on a moving train in India as he forces her back into the carriage to protect her from serious rioting on the platform. Far from being grateful, Brucena is outraged, having no idea that she is contravening Major Hadleigh’s own orders that no Europeans may travel to the forbidden area of Saugor. She is on her way to join her cousin, Captain Sleeman and his wife, Amelie, intending without their knowledge to work as a Nanny to their as yet unborn child and thereby escaping a fault-finding father who hates her for her beauty and for not being the boy he so desperately needs for his estate and Castle in Scotland But Brucena soon finds far more to fear under India’s searing sun. First the unwanted attentions of the somewhat sinister Lord Rawthorne and, worse still, the devotees of Thuggee – highway murderers who strangle their victims from behind with a yellow silk scarf – It is only when, rescuing her in the darkness from the clutches of would-be murderers and Iain’s lips fall on hers, that Brucena realises that she has been in love with the dashing and handsome Major all along!

Written in Irvin Yalom’s inimitable story-telling style, Staring at the Sun is a profoundly encouraging approach to the universal issue of mortality. In this magisterial opus, capping a lifetime of work and personal experience, Dr Yalom helps us recognise that the fear of death is at the heart of much of our day-to-day anxiety. This reality is often brought to the surface by an 'awakening experience' — a dream, a loss (such as the death of a loved one, a divorce, or the loss of a job or home), illness, trauma, or ageing. Once we confront our own mortality, Dr Yalom writes, we are inspired to rearrange our priorities, communicate more deeply with those we love, appreciate more keenly the beauty of life, and increase our willingness to take the risks necessary for personal fulfillment. This is a book with tremendous utility, including the provision of techniques for dealing with the most prevalent kinds of fears of death — especially by living in the here and now, and by embracing what Dr Yalom calls ‘rippling’, the influence and impact we all have that has a life beyond our own.

Two books in one, the only award winning translation of Sun Tzu's The Art of War plus our award-winning stanza-by-stanza adaptation applying his principles to the war on terror. This second edition updates the book a decade after its first release to address recent changes in the Middle East including the recent invasion of Iraq by ISIS fundamentalists. This award-winning book adapts Sun Tzu's timeless principles to address today's military challenge of terrorism. Foreword Magazine's 2006 Book of the Year Finalist in Philosophy, Like all our adaptations, Sun Tzu's Art of War is on the left-hand pages with our application to terror on the facing right-hand pages. Unlike partisan views of the war on terror, this book follows Sun Tzu's principles stanza by stanza, examining the relevant issues as he would. What emerges in a unique picture of the war on terror that you cannot get anywhere else. For example, Sun Tzu tells us that all war are based on economics and forces us to examine the economic underpinnings of terrorist attacks. What is the real battle underlying terrorism? How does attacking civilians generate money for the terrorists? What will happen if the West refuses to engage terrorism. Conqueror of the Sun – Book 3 – Reign of Terror tells the story of Shawn Arc and his IRF Empire on its track to conquer the whole world. Using everything from Arc’s manipulative charm on past lovers to using a nuclear-scorched earth campaign, the resisting nations bend, quake, and tremble under the weight of the IRF war machine’s blitzkrieg. Will the Fighting Axis of countries be able to hold onto the last pieces of the Earth? Will Shawn Arc’s betrayals, deceptions, and body count finally come back to haunt him? Or is Arc destined to become the Conqueror of the Sun? The Conqueror of the Sun series is a seven-book saga that has been 30 years in the making. The story is about a man named Shawn Arc and his desire for power and control beyond anything achieved in human history so far. The tale takes place in an alternate history that starts in the 1990s and extends far, far into the future. Shawn Arc is willing to do anything to accomplish his goals, whether it be by deception, conspiracy, war, betrayal, or on the backs of millions of dead. At the same time, the story shows that Shawn Arc is also about love, romance, and intimate relationships. Can this man be both monster and human? Or is he merely a larger than normal mirror to reflect the essence of the human condition?

Kang-i Sun Chang is Malcolm G. Chace ’56 Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University. In her memoir, Journey Through the White Terror, she tells the powerful story of her father Paul Sun (1919-2007). Along with numerous others, Sun was imprisoned more than 60 years ago during the “White Terror”, the decade following the withdrawal of Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government from Mainland China to Taiwan in mid-December 1949. During this time, the Nationalist government implemented a policy of “better to kill ten thousand by mistake than to set one free by oversight,” and as a result, many innocent civilians such as the author’s father became victims of ferocious searches and persecutions. At the time of her father’s arrest, Prof. Chang was not quite six years old; when her father returned home, she was almost sixteen. Having witnessed the injustice of her father’s imprisonment and the freedom their family later enjoyed in America, she felt compelled to write this story. Prof. Chang’s account of how the family survived the White Terror makes her book one of the most intense and thrilling works on the subject. But the book is also about soul-searching and the healing of a childhood trauma. It is a true story about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Love and religion in such circumstances prove to be the ultimate deliverance. All this is described in considerable detail in this extraordinary memoir.
