Sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains eight lectures given between 1974 and 1983 in honor of Karl Terzaghi and repressenting diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Topics include: the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and how a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies; effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction; bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations; design and construction of drilled shafts; evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering; proposal forØthe establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures, with several case studies; pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas and technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago; and recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams. The 1978 lecture by the late N.M. Newmark is not included.

Designed for the undergraduate students of civil engineering, this textbook covers the theoretical aspects of soil mechanics and foundation engineering in a single volume. The text is organized in two parts—Part I (Soil mechanics) and Part II (Foundation engineering): Part I includes the basic properties and strength of soil, vertical and lateral pressures, discussion on earthen dam, sheet piles, and stability analysis for hill slope in connection with hill road construction. Part II discusses shallow and deep foundations, approaches of analysis of machine foundation, and various methods of determining the bearing capacity of soil. A separate chapter is devoted to on-site investigation. Besides the undergraduate students, this compendium will also be useful for students appearing for various competitive examinations such as GATE, IES and IAS. Consulting engineers in geotechnical engineering may also use this book as a reference. KEY FEATURES : Includes numerical problems (with solutions) in connection with construction of dams and highways in hilly region Figures and explanations to facilitate professionals and designers of machine foundation to solve the complex problem of stability analysis Objective-type questions to aid in UPSC examinations

Geotechnical Problem Solving written by John C. Lommler and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-26 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Devised with a focus on problem solving, Geotechnical Problem Solving bridges the gap between geotechnical and soil mechanics material covered in university Civil Engineering courses and the advanced topics required for practicing Civil, Structural and Geotechnical engineers. By giving newly qualified engineers the information needed to apply their extensive theoretical knowledge, and informing more established practitioners of the latest developments, this book enables readers to consider how to confidently approach problems having thought through the various options available. Where various competing solutions are proposed, the author systematically leads through each option, weighing up the benefits and drawbacks of each, to ensure the reader can approach and solve real-world problems in a similar manner The scope of material covered includes a range of geotechnical topics, such as soil classification, soil stresses and strength and soil self-weight settlement. Shallow and deep foundations are analyzed, including special articles on laterally loaded piles, retaining structures including MSE and Tieback walls, slope and trench stability for natural, cut and fill slopes, geotechnical uncertainty, and geotechnical LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design).

This book features a panorama of the lives of selected personalities, whose roots had origin in the Czech lands and who, in the US, reached extraordinary success and who, with their activities, substantially influenced the growth and development of their new homeland. It is a saga of plain, as well as powerful, people whose influence and importance often exceeded the borders of the US. A great portion of included individuals may be unknown to readers since it concerns persons whose Czech origin was usually not known. The book covers the total period from the times of the discovery of New World to the end of the twentieth century. During the selection, little concern was given to nationalistic or ethnographic criteria, the only prerequisite was that the respected individuals were either born on the territory of the Czech lands or were descendants of emigrants from the Czech lands. The image on the front cover is a portrait of Augustine Herman, Lord of Bohemia Manor, the first documented Czech immigrant in the United States. The portrait comes from his famous Map of Maryland and Virginia, dated 1670. The colorful story of his life would be unbelievable if made into a movie. Pioneer, merchant, explorer, surveyor, map maker, patriot, rebel, diplomat, and finally Lord! Read more about him in the book.

'These three portraits beautifully capture the variety and complexity of mother–daughter relationships.' - The Lady Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie and Sylvia Plath are three of our most famous authors. This book tells in full the story of the remarkable mothers who shaped them. Julia Stephen, Clara Miller and Aurelia Plath were fascinating women in their own rights, and their relationships with their daughters were exceptional; they profoundly influenced the writers' lives, literature and attitude to feminism. Too often in the past Virginia, Agatha and Sylvia have been defined by their lovers – Mothers of the Mind redresses the balance by charting the complex, often contradictory, bond between mother and daughter. Drawing on sources from archives around the world and accounts from family and friends of the women, this book offers a fresh perspective on these iconic authors.
