The purpose of the work reported was to investigate test procedures for bond extension tests for pavement crack fillers. A review of existing physical tests for crack fillers indicated a need for other than the standard AASHTO Test T187 and modifications made by researchers to the standard method. Two devices were built to test joints or cracks filled with sealants that have been used to keep water from entering a pavement system through surface cracks. Asphaltic concrete beams 12 x 5 x 3 inches in dimension were grooved and broken, and the grooves filled with sealants to serve as test specimens. The bonded beams were strained with two modes; one, under continuous elongation of the filler until failure occurred, and two, under a repeated tensile-compressive deformation until the joint was failed. Variables to the tests included temperature, dimensions of the groove, and amount of repeated deformation. Test results did not show a particular trend for the slow extensibility as affected by the ratio of width/depth (shape factor) of the joint. The extensibility at 32 degrees was generally less than at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Some fairly good correlations were found between applied strain and the logarithm of repetitions of the repeated strain to cause failure. A method is suggested for setting specification values for sealants tested with the new methods. Continued experimentation with the repeated loading device would require a stronger (stiffer) construction for tests carried out at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (A).

This report summarizes the analysis of transverse cracking in asphalt pavement by a five state study team from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. The study was initiated under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration and four evaluation conferences were held during the course of the study. Each state conducted a crack inventory on their asphalt pavement. An effort was made to correlate this inventory with numerous factors that were considered to be pertinent to the cracking problem. One state did indicate that there was a correlation between transverse cracking severity and the subsurface geology. The other states were unable to identify any significant factors as being the primary contributors. The analysis of the problem was divided into, (1) mix design, (2) maintenance, and (3) 3R rehabilitation. Many potential factors to be considered were identified under each of these three study divisions.

Internationally, much attention is given to causes, prevention, and rehabilitation of cracking in concrete, flexible, and composite pavements. The Sixth RILEMInternational Conference on Cracking in Pavements (Chicago, June 16-18, 2008) provided a forum for discussion of recent developments and research results. This book is a collection of papers fr

Evaluation Of Flexible Pavement Crack Sealing Methods Used In Utah written by Michael C. Belangie and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981 with Pavements categories.

The primary purpose of this study was to develop criteria to improve the effectiveness of Utah's flexible pavement crack sealing practice. The methodology involved field measurements of seasonal variation in crack width and in-depth interviews of Department members at various levels of management in maintenance, materials, construction, and research. Other states were queried by questionnaire in order to obtain a comparative base on with to evaluate Utah's practice. Findings indicate that flexible pavement cracking is a significant problem in the Far West, Rocky Mountains, Great Lakes, and New England. Criteria to determine when to seal (fill) cracks, and materials or techniques to be used vary widely. Choice of materials if affected by storage requirements and equipment available. Prepackaging of materials especially designed for crack sealing has resulted in improvements in control of mix and material properties; further gains can be anticipated as mix design improves and material specifications become more exact.. Low temperature and freeze thaw cycles significantly affect the amount of thermal cracking and the performance of crack sealant. Poor rideability, increased pavement deterioration, obscured traffic markings, lowered skid resistance can result from inappropriate selection and installation of crack sealants. Ductile sealants such as Crumb rubber/asphalt cement mixes, in combination with routing appear to offer substantial gains in sealant life and performance. These gains are partially offset by increased installation cost and hazard to the operator. Existing data is insufficient for benefit/cost analysis.

Current crack sealant specifications utilize a simple empirical bond test [ASTM D5329, "Standard Test Methods for Sealants and Fillers, Hot-Applied, for Joints and Cracks in Asphaltic and Portland Cement Concrete Pavements"] to measure a sealant's ability to adhere to concrete briquettes. However, no correlation exists between the results of this standard test and a sealant's field performance. To bridge the gap between sealants' fundamental properties and field performance, performance-based guidelines for the selection of hot-poured crack sealants have been developed. This paper proposes a new test procedure to help assess the capability of sealants to adhere to the sides of cracks in pavement. The proposed crack sealant adhesion direct tensile (CSADT) test procedure calls for the use of a direct tensile tester with modifications to the end pieces and the specimen holder. Sealant is confined between two aluminum pieces, which will move apart at 0.05 mm/s until failure occurs. Failure load and the displacement at failure are recorded and then used to assess the sealant's adhesion capability. A crack created on one side of the assembly during specimen preparation determines the initial failure location and ensures that the failure occurs at the interface and not within the sealant. The specimen preparation is designed to simulate sealant installation, and experimental conditions have been developed to represent crack openings during pavement contraction in cold weather. The repeatability of the suggested procedure was acceptable with an average coefficient of variation of 10.9 %. No significant difference existed between two operators or between two test setups.
