Quali erano le forme della comunicazione scritta e parlata dei "senza lettere", ossia della gente comune senza conoscenze del latino, nelle regioni italofone della Svizzera dal Cinquecento al Novecento? Nella prima parte del libro si ricostruisce il contesto economico e socioculturale di comunità segnate dalla mobilità nell'emigrazione, in situazioni dove per capire e farsi capire era essenziale andare oltre i confini dei dialetti locali. Con il rilevante contributo al processo di alfabetizzazione garantito dalle chiese riformata e controriformista, e soprattutto dalla scuola pubblica ottocentesca, si è formato un italiano popolare del quale vengono qui descritti i tratti costitutivi, e che tale poteva definirsi proprio perché rappresentava lo strumento comune e indispensabile della comunicazione. Da questo punto di vista lo studio di Bianconi si contrappone allo stereotipo diffuso che esclude l'italiano parlato e scritto dal repertorio della gente comune nel passato. La seconda parte del volume è costituita da un'ampia antologia di testi di italiano popolare dal Cinquecento al Novecento: lettere e autobiografie di donne, mastri d'arte, domestici, operai e contadini, attivi in patria e nell'emigrazione. Questi scritti non sono solo di notevole interesse per lo storico della lingua, ma rappresentano la testimonianza autentica di un mondo sommerso. La conquista della scrittura - "sbagliata", appassionata ed espressiva - e il rapporto complesso e vitale con la lingua italiana permettono a quegli uomini e a quelle donne di dare voce alla necessità di raccontarsi, lagnarsi e inveire; e a noi di ascoltare un'umanità che senza la scrittura non avrebbe lasciato traccia di sé.
