Perché oggi è molto più facile sentirsi offrire dello street food anziché del "cibo di strada"? Come presidente dell'Accademia della Crusca, Claudio Marazzini combatte ogni giorno per difendere la nostra meravigliosa lingua e attrezzarla per le sfide del futuro. L'italiano, ci ricorda Marazzini, ha una storia diversa da quella dell'inglese o del francese - nati con gli Stati nazionali - perché è fiorito ben prima che ci fosse l'Italia: dopo essersi sviluppato nel Medioevo come idioma popolare figlio del latino, si è arricchito splendidamente con la nostra grande letteratura diventando così, fra tutte le lingue, la più colta, raffinata e amata all'estero. Vogliamo dunque ora perdere questo nostro immenso patrimonio di sensibilità e di cultura? In questo libro Marazzini, compiendo un'analisi rigorosa e approfondita, presenta una lucida diagnosi dello stato di salute della nostra lingua e pone le basi per invertire la rotta, appellandosi anche ai politici e alle università, spesso responsabili della dispersione di parole e significati. Allo stesso tempo, passando in rassegna gli errori di ogni genere che si stanno insinuando, ci offre l'opportunità di correggerci e di recuperare le mille e mille sfumature della nostra meravigliosa lingua che forse ci stanno sfuggendo.

In many European languages the National Standard Variety is converging with spoken, informal, and socially marked varieties. In Italian this process is giving rise to a new standard variety called Neo-standard Italian, which partly consists of regional features. This book contributes to current research on standardization in Europe by offering a comprehensive overview of the re-standardization dynamics in Italian. Each chapter investigates a specific dynamic shaping the emergence of Neo-standard Italian and Regional Standard Varieties, such as the acceptance of previously non-standard features, the reception of Old Italian features excluded from the standard variety, the changing standard language ideology, the retention of features from Italo-Romance dialects, the standardization of patterns borrowed from English, and the developmental tendencies of standard Italian in Switzerland. The contributions investigate phonetic/phonological, prosodic, morphosyntactic, and lexical phenomena, addressed by several empirical methodologies and theoretical vantage points. This work is of interest to scholars and students working on language variation and change, especially those focusing on standard languages and standardization dynamics.
