Screening Religions In Italy written by Clodagh J. Brook and has been published by University of Toronto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with History categories.

Religion has had been foundational in shaping Italy. Home to the Vatican State, the Italian peninsula is the religious centre for one billion Catholics globally. It is also increasingly home to those of other faiths, especially Islam. Italy's development as a contemporary post-secular and multi-religious society is fraught and fascinating. The recent return of religious discourse from the margins of Western society to a central position is a sign of what German philosopher, J?rgen Habermas, has defined as the post-secular condition. Habermas and others have questioned what most people in the West had, up to a few years ago, taken for granted: the unstoppable forward march of secularization and the subsequent marginalization of religion. Instead, one of the greatest global fault-lines in the contemporary world - the divide between absolutist extremist Islamic faith and liberal, but Christian-inflected, secular values - has religious identity at its core. The first book-length study to examine religion in contemporary Italian cinema and television fiction, Screening Religions in Italy identifies two key issues: how Italian filmmaking constructs the continuing position of religion in the public sphere and why religion persists on Italian screens. It spans genres such as horror, comedy, hagiopics, and TV fiction, and explores both commercial and art-house filmmaking. It treats films and television series that range from Moretti's Habemus Papam to Sorrentino's The Young Pope.

"I'm a mystery to myself." With this simple admission, Padre Pio captured the feelings of many who knew him. In his latest work, Renzo Allegri, a journalist and writer, dispels some of this mystery with this unique and very human portrait of Padre Pio. It is a faithful description of an extraordinary person, a book that reads like a good novel. Beatified on May 22, 1999, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina (1887-1968) was a Capuchin monk and mystic whose life was marked with miracles and wonders, but who said that his only desire was "to be a poor friar who prays." Set in Reformation Europe, Q begins with Luther's nailing of his 95 theses on the door of the cathedral church in Wittenberg. Q traces the adventures and conflicts of two central characters: an Anabaptist, a member of the most radical of the Protestant sects and the anarchists of the Reformation, and a Catholic spy and informer, on their thrilling journey across Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. The four young writers who shelter behind the pseudonym Luther Blissett have created a world of intrigue, violence and intense political and religious passion. Far from the traditional example of historical fiction, Q is the stuff of which cults are made.

Carlo M. Martini was cardinal of the largest diocese in the world, a scholar, and one of the most renowned men of the church. Georg Sporschill has worked in prisons and lived with drug-addicted street children in Romania and Moldavia. The two Jesuits met in Jerusalem and became firends: two worlds, one faith--and a passionate search for ways in which the message of Jesus of Nazareth can still be effective for tomorrow. In a series of conversations they ask what faith can mean for life, what future young people have in the church, and what must be changed so that Crhistianity itself has a future. The questions from young people are the catalyst for deep thought. Is the future only dark? Where are the rays of light on the horizon? What would Jesus say today?

Letter To A Priest written by Simone Weil and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-17 with Religion categories.

Hailed by Albert Camus as ‘the only great spirit of our times’, Simone Weil was one of great essayists and activists of the twentieth century. Her writings on the nature of religious faith and spirituality have inspired many subsequent thinkers. Wrestling with the moral dilemmas entailed by commitment to the Catholic Church, Letter to a Priest is a brilliant meditation on the perennial battle between faith and doubt and resonates today as much as when it was first written. This edition also includes one of her most inspiring and celebrated essays, ‘Human Personality’, where Weil offers a moving and unorthodox account of the preciousness of human beings. With a new foreword by Raimond Gaita.
