This lavish spread of literary entertainment features nineteen stories selected from the first two seasons of "Texas Bound," part of the "Arts and Letters Live" literary series presented at the Dallas Museum of Art by the Museum and the Friends of the Dallas Public Library. From pickup trucks and prairie skies to rhinestone cowboys and glittering skylines, these stories explore the Lone Star State--both its terrain and its state of mind. The volume includes stories by well-known Texas authors such as Larry McMurtry, Rick Bass, and Larry L. King, as well as stories by Texans with less familiar names. In "There Will Be Peace in Korea" Larry McMurtry catches the gritty realities of life in a West Texas town on the night before a young man goes off to war. William Goyen's "The Texas Principessa" is a hilarious tale about a Houston dry goods heiress who goes to Venice to marry an impoverished Italian prince. Reginald McKnight's "The Kind of Light That Shines on Texas" depicts a young black boy in a Waco school who comes face-to-face with his own version of racism. "Old Enough" by Mary K. Flatten is about love and loss in Austin, narrated by a woman on whom the emotional tables have been turned. The anthology also features stories by Lee Merrill Byrd, Diane DeSanders, Robert Flynn, A.C. Greene, William Hauptman, Shelby Hearon, Tomas Rivera, Annette Sanford, C.W. Smith, Lynna Williams, Bryan Woolley, and Lawrence Wright. Whether the setting is a country cemetery near Chillicothe, a '50s-style burger joint in Dallas's Deep Ellum, or a Baptist youth camp in Oklahoma, the stories depict people who are "Texas Bound"--bound to the state, bound for it, or bound together by it.

Seth had never cared for the easy life. When things got too comfortable he always found trouble--or it found him. He had found at an early age the prosperous plantation that had been in his family for four generations did not offer enough challenges to make him happy. In fact, the whole state of Virginia was too tame for him. So, as soon as he graduated from William and Mary, he struck out to find someplace he could have the freedom and space he desired. In 1836, after nearly a year of searching, he finds himself in Texas. He enters the territory just days after the small, inexperienced Texas army, in it's attempt to win Texas' independence from Mexico, has met a devastating defeat at the hands of the large and powerful Mexican army. After establishing a rather large and prosperous cattle ranch in the Texas hill country he meets the woman who makes his life complete. They raise a family and together meet the challenges of the unsettled frontier. Together they establish a Texas dynasty and leave their footprints in Texas history.

"They were the Texas volunteers. On an open prairie in front of a mission called the Alamo, Santa Anna' soldiers won a brutal victory-in a battle that became a call to arms around the country. Brave men answered from across the United States: New Englanders and Virginians, Kentuckians and Cajuns, all came to the brawling, sprawling province called Texas to sign a Declaration of Independence on Sam Houston's birthday. Now four men from Alabama, new recruits in John Shakleford's Red Rovers, have joined the fight: Pierce Hammond, the cowardly son of a wealthy plantation owner; Mingo Green, a runaway slave yearning to be free; Boone Tasker, too poor to marry the woman he loves; and Gabe Cochran, a young widower with nothing left to live for. Fleeing their pasts, they are bound by a noble cause. And they will back up their words with their honor, their courage, and their lives."--BOOK COVER

Charlie Chaplin the actor is universally synonymous with his beloved Tramp character. Chaplin the director is considered one of the great auteurs and innovators of cinema history. Less well known is Chaplin the composer, whose instrumental theme for Modern Times (1936) later became the popular standard "Smile," a Billboard hit for Nat "King" Cole in 1954. Chaplin was prolific yet could not read or write music. It took a rotating cast of talented musicians to translate his unorthodox humming, off-key singing, and amateur piano and violin playing into the singular orchestral vision he heard in his head. Drawing on numerous transcriptions from 60 years of original scores, this comprehensive study reveals the untold story of Chaplin the composer and the string of famous (and not-so-famous) musicians he employed, giving fresh insight into his films and shedding new light on the man behind the icon.

The Alcalde serves as an intellectual crossroads where UT's luminaries - artists, engineers, executives, musicians, attorneys, journalists, lawmakers, and professors among them - meet bimonthly to exchange ideas. Its pages also offer a place for Texas Exes to swap stories and share memories of Austin and their alma mater. The magazine's unique name is Spanish for "mayor" or "chief magistrate"; the nickname of the governor who signed UT into existence was "The Old Alcalde."
