Excerpt from Animal Forms: A Text-Book of Zoology In the oak-tree, for example, the roots reaching down into the earth, with the branches and leaves spreading out into the air and sunlight, are admirably fitted for taking up the food, which consists of very simple materials, less com plex than those forming the diet of an animal. This permits a continuous existence in one place, and accord ingly we note the entire absence of locomotion and the or gans controlling it, which form so conspicuous a part of the body of an animal. Also in the production of flowers and seeds, and in the growth of the seed into the tree, we detect many characteristics peculiar to plants. Excerpt from Text Book of Zoology AN English translation of Dr. Boas's Lehrbuch der Zoologie, which has already appeared in two Danish and two German editions, has been arranged in the hope that it may prove useful to yet a larger public. The translation is designed, in the first place, to assist beginners in the study of Zoology but the needs of students of Medicine, of Veterinary Surgery, and of Forestry have also been kept in View. It will be noticed that Dr. Boas gives prominence to facts rather than to theories, and of these, such as should be of use to one or other of the classes of readers just enumerated, or as should be most convenient for verification. Excerpt from Text Book of Vertebrate Zoology Within recent years the laboratory method has become the basis of instruction in every science. The student is expected to find out a certain number of fundamental facts directly from nature, but while this has in itself great value as a training in observation, the fullest benefit of the study is not obtained unless there be a comprehension of the bearings of the facts observed. Observation and uncorrellated facts do not make a science. Attention can be directed to the relations and significance of the facts ascertained in the laboratory by means of lectures, but a somewhat extended experience has shown that the average student needs something more than his lecture notes, at least when beginning any subject. The present volume is intended to supplement both lectures and laboratory work, and to place in concise form the more important facts and generalizations concerning the vertebrates. It is also hoped that it may have some value for students of medicine in explaining many peculiarities of the structure of man which seem meaningless unless viewed in the light of comparative morphology. When once their meaning is comprehended it is easy to remember them. The first part of the volume is devoted to an outline of the morphology of vertebrates based upon embryology. This treatment has been adopted, since the author believes that in this way the bearings of the facts can be most clearly shown and most easily remembered. The remainder of the volume presents an outline of the classification of vertebrates, a subject which, in recent years, has been too much ignored in college work. Here the fossils are included as well as the recent forms, since the existing fauna must be studied in the light of the past. Numerous generic names have been mentioned without characterization; they have been inserted in order that the student may be able to ascertain the relationships of the forms he may find mentioned in collateral reading. Excerpt from A Text-Book in General Zoology In offering to the educational public this text-book in general zoology, with the guide for laboratory and field work designed to be used in connection with it, we desire to explain in brief the method of construction we have followed. The treatment Of the phyla is in a descending order from the Arthropoda to the Protozoa, and in an ascending order from the fishes to man, with the exception that the Mollusca are described after instead of before the Arthropoda. After many years Of experience with classes of young students we believe that an order of treatment resembling this is likely to yield the best results, although we do not deny that good results may be Obtained with young students by following what is sometimes called the order of evolution, beginning with the Protozoa. Although the chapters are interdependent, we think that there is sufficient unity in each to make it possible for the teacher to diverge from the order we have employed. Zoology written by Floyd Earle Chidester and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-08 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Zoology: A Textbook for College and University Students After using much of the subject matter as a mimeographed text, the author prepared the manuscript in its final form, and during three summers has availed himself of the aid of many specialists at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass. Through the interest of various authorities who gave advance information about their work, certain chapters include material prior to the actual publication of the research discussed. Some of the most important features of the book are the logical arrangement of facts about the animals within a group, a statement of the chief characteristics at the beginning of the discussion, and a summary on the economic importance at the end of each section. The newer physiology has been introduced and a bibliography checked by experts in each field is given at the end of each chapter. Sources readily available have been selected and resumes chosen instead of the pioneer researches. Extensive discussions of Embry ology and Animal Behavior have been found undesirable since such studies cannot be comprehensively treated in an introductory course without excluding other fundamental subjects.
