This document serves as the third revision of the USAF Parachute Handbook which was first published in 1951. The data and information represent the current state of the art relative to recovery system design and development. The initial chapters describe representative recovery applications, components, subsystems, material, manufacture and testing. The final chapters provide empirical data and analytical methods useful for predicting performance and presenting a definitive design of selected components into a reliable recovery system.

This report contains the proceedings of the Retardation and Recovery Symposium sponsored by the Aeronautical Systems Division on 13 and 14 November 1962. The Introductory Session was opened with the Keynote Address which reviewed the use and applications of deployable aerodynamic decelerators throughout the past fifty (50) years and noted the areas in which additional work had to be accomplished. The four Technical Sessions deal with the latest significant developments in the retardation and recovery area. The Technical Sessions begin with presentations and discussions of investigations in the hypersonic and supersonic flight regimes followed by a technical analysis of transonic and supersonic flow phenomena. In addition, new aerodynamic decelerator designs and discussion of the wind tunnel tests pertaining to these designs, as well as overall reliability of recovery systems, are presented. The final Technical Session concludes with a discussion of the military, scientific, and general objectives for decelerators intended for future use.

This bibliography was prepared by the Defense Documentation Center (DDC) for use at a symposium on Parachute Technology. Citations included for documents cataloged by DDC from 1953 through 1963 are restricted to unclassified unlimited references. Entries are arranged in alphabetical sequence by subject areas pertaining to aerial delivery, canopies, materials, parachutes (types), recovery systems, physical effects, and testing. These subject areas are subdivided further into more specific topics.

The characteristics of Guide Surface, Ribbon and Rotafoil parachutes operated in the speed ranges up to 500 miles per hour are described. These characteristics were determined by means of two tests conducted with rocket powered test vehicles operated on the Free Air Test Facility Track at Edwards Air Force Base. The various parachutes tested are intended for use as parabrakes to decelerated high velocity missiles to relatively low speeds at which large parachutes can be satisfactorily deployed to accomplish safe recovery. All test parachutes were designed to have drag areas of approximtely 28 ft2 and factors of safety of 1.5 at 400 miles per hour. The data obtained during this test program included inflation times, opening shock factors, drag forces and inflated diameters of the test parachutes at various deployment speeds. These data are used to provide design information about drag coefficients, critical opening speeds, porosities, and strength requirements for these parachutes.

A. Purpose. To consolidate and to present all available information concerning the use, design, and construction details of the FIST type ribbon Parachute. B. Factual Data. Development of the FIST parachute was begun in Germany in the year 1933, as the result of a series of experiments to construct parachutes suitable for use as aircraft dive and landing brakes. Though the FIST parachute was originally designed for high stability, it proved to have very desirable low opening shock characteristics. For this reason, it was used extensively by the German Armed Forces during the last war for high speed cargo delivery, aircraft deceleration, and missile recovery.
