Uwe Johnson bekundete Ende der 1960er Jahre, das Interesse an der Religion nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg verloren zu haben und über keine religiösen Bindungen (mehr) zu verfügen. Demgegenüber zeugen seine Romane, vom Erstling »Ingrid Babendererde« bis zum Opus magnum »Jahrestage«, von einem überaus produktiven Umgang mit dem Buch der Bücher, der Bibel. Die zahlreichen Zitate und Anspielungen auf die Heilige Schrift wurden in der vorliegenden Studie umfänglich systematisiert, in eine diskursive Ordnung überführt und auf ihre Funktion(en) hin befragt. Im Zentrum der Bibelrezeption Johnsons steht vor dem Hintergrund des Zivilisationsbruchs in Auschwitz eine doppelte narrative Ethik, in der ethische Komplexe im Medium der Narration reflektiert und zugleich narrativ vorgeführt werden. Uwe Johnson declared at the end of the 1960s that he had lost interest in religion after the Second World War and that he no longer had any religious ties. In contrast, the novels by the Mecklenburg author, from his first novel "Ingrid Babendererde" to the opus magnum "Jahrestage", bear witness to an extremly productive use of the Bible. The numerous quotations and allusions to the Bible have been comprehensively systematized in this study, transferred into a discursive order and questioned as to their function(s). Against the background of civilisation breakout at Auschwitz, Johnson's biblical reception focuses on a double narrative ethic, in which ethical complexes are reflected in the medium of narration and at the same time presented in a narrative way.

Einen Großteil unseres Wissens nehmen wir in Diskurszusammenhängen wahr. Was in der Welt Gültigkeit hat, wird in Sprecherhandlungen als faktisch gegeben dargestellt. Unser Wissen über die Welt in Form von Fakten ist also in Diskurse eingebunden ‐ in diesen wird Faktizität konstituiert. Der schillernde Begriff der Diskursanalyse scheint hierbei prima facie ein Erkenntnishindernis darzustellen. Diese vermeintliche Schwäche der Begriffsunschärfe ist Motivation für die Beleuchtung der Diskursanalyse aus dem Blickwinkel der jeweiligen Einzeldisziplin. Durch die Betrachtung des Diskursverständnisses innerhalb und außerhalb der Linguistik wird the state of the art kontrastiv vor allem durch die Beiträge der Soziologie, der Philosophie und der Risikoforschung facettenreicher und schärfer herausgearbeitet. Die dadurch perspektivierte Dynamik des Wissens im Spiegel des Erinnerns und Vergessens von „Faktischem“ wird hinsichtlich der Dechiffrierung von Diskurspraktiken mit Blick auf die Frage problematisiert, welches Wissen als erhaltenswert und welches im Diskurs als vernachlässigbar zu klassifizieren ist.

Sprachlicher Wettstreit zwischen kontroversen Positionen und unterschiedlichen Geltungsansprüchen prägt Diskurse zu umstrittenen Themen und Wissensbeständen; Wissen wird dabei sprachlich ausgehandelt. Diese Diskursstudie untersucht sprachvergleichend zwischen dem Deutschen und Englischen mittels einer systematischen Kombination aus qualitativen und quantitativen Verfahren, welche sprachlichen und visuellen Formen Agonalität induzieren und Konflikte anzeigen. Damit steht eine neu entwickelte Diskursmethodologie für weitere diskurs- und sprachvergleichende Arbeiten zur Verfügung. Die empirische Analyse vergleicht exemplarisch Medientextkorpora um das Energiegewinnungsverfahren Fracking und den Hurrikan Sandy, der 2012 vor allem die USA traf, im Hinblick auf sprachlichen Wettstreit. Der entwickelte methodische Ansatz eignet sich ebenfalls für eine Analyse multimodaler Formen und fiktionaler Texte, was in zwei Exkursen gezeigt wird. Das Buch richtet sich in erster Linie an Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftler, die sich für vergleichende Herangehensweisen und Formen sprachlichen Wettstreits in Diskursen interessieren.

In ten brilliant essays, Jan Assmann explores the connections between religion, culture, and memory. Building on Maurice Halbwachs's idea that memory, like language, is a social phenomenon as well as an individual one, he argues that memory has a cultural dimension too. He develops a persuasive view of the life of the past in such surface phenomena as codes, religious rites and festivals, and canonical texts on the one hand, and in the Freudian psychodrama of repressing and resurrecting the past on the other. Whereas the current fad for oral history inevitably focuses on the actual memories of the last century or so, Assmann presents a commanding view of culture extending over five thousand years. He focuses on cultural memory from the Egyptians, Babylonians, and the Osage Indians down to recent controversies about memorializing the Holocaust in Germany and the role of memory in the current disputes between Israelis and Palestinians in the Middle East and between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland.

The Topography of Remembrance deals with different forms of remembrance and collective memory in Mesopotamia, discussing both its public (national) and private (family) aspects. The Introduction offers a history of modern, European memory in comparison with the Mesopotamian mode. The research adds to the recent discussion on collective memory. The Mesopotamians found tools for the construction and passing on of common remembrance in liturgical repetition, in the preservation of buildings and monuments, and in communication channels. To describe these processes the author deals with different texts written between 2300-300 BC, which transport memory from a historical, administrational or religious perspective. According to this study, the need to remember was prompted by the search for identity, a dynamic process in which forgetting played an essential part. The description of this process is also relevant to modern society. It offers an important contribution to the discussion of acculturation and identity.
