John Milton (1608-74), formidable poète avec le Paradis perdu, fut aussi un prosateur hors pair. À l'époque de la révolution anglaise, il rédige une série de pamphlets qu'il voit néanmoins comme l'« oeuvre de sa main gauche », où il couvre les divers champs de la liberté : liberté religieuse, liberté personnelle ou domestique, liberté civile. Ce livre se propose d'analyser les mécanismes fondamentaux de la pensée miltonienne, l'influence mutuelle de la théologie, définie comme « l'étude de l'Écriture », et du politique, au sens large d'organisation de la Cité. Les exemples ou principes scripturaires exploités par Milton servent-ils d'argumentaire à sa politique ? Et / ou sa théologie vient-elle cautionner des idées préétablies sur la polis ? L'étude ira de la liberté individuelle à la liberté politique. Milton privilégie-t-il la théologie lorsqu'il se penche sur la vie privée pour prouver que le divorce se justifie en cas d'incompatibilité d'humeur ? Quand il aborde le problème culturel, qu'il s'agisse de préconiser « une éducation libérale et généreuse » ou de défendre la liberté de la presse, d'acquérir ou de transmettre le savoir, Milton cherche-t-il seulement une base théologique afin de soutenir un projet politique ? Quand il traite la cause ecclésiastique pour affirmer son antiprélatisme ou prôner la séparation des deux sphères, Milton s'appuie-t-il sur des arguments strictement théologiques jusqu'à dégager l'Église du politique ? Enfin, au moment où il envisage le gouvernement de l'État, sa théorie du pouvoir érigée sur le salut du peuple, son apologie du tyrannicide ou son républicanisme avéré dans « une démocratie frugale & autonome », marquent-ils la fin d'une logique théologique au profit d'une argumentation politique ? Cela ferait de Milton, héritier de l'humanisme de la Renaissance, le précurseur des philosophes du siècle des Lumières.
