Although the Asia-Pacific region has, for a long time, been associated with inbound tourism its growth rate for outbound tourism is greater than any other of the world's economic blocks. One feature of this growth is that 78% of outbound Asian traffic is within the region itself, and this intra-regional traffic has an important economic role. UNWTO has therefore commissioned a series of reports on the trends and potential of seven leading markets: Australia; China; Hong Kong; India; Japan; Republic of Korea; and Thailand.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Sawasdee Khrap welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as The Land of Smiles , The Land of Temples and Pagodas and Tropical Vacation Paradise describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way the reader will get an understanding of the current situation in Asia and the general impact of 9-11. After a general overview of Thailand, the first class hotel market of Bangkok will be analyzed by its occupancy, ADR and RevPar development. These performance related information create the backbone of this report and support further assumptions and findings. For validity reasons, the results are then compared to two independent surveys. The fourth section is made up of the changes in travel patterns, tourism demand and strategies, followed by a comparison of the two best performing individual hotels and their advantages over [...]

Visitors to Thailand’s urban and beach-sided tourist hotspots notice the presence of colourful and predominantly female vendors offering self-made and mass-manufactured products. A high percentage of these vendors are members of the highland ethnic minority group of Akha who have become micro-entrepreneurs or self-employed street vendors. The work and everyday life experiences of these ethnic minority migrants are situated at the intersections of tourism, migration, and the informal sector. This book investigates the social, economic, and political embeddedness of street vendors in urban tourist contexts in Thailand. Based on extensive field research, it presents a detailed analysis of urban-directed mobility patterns and revealing strategies and dilemmas in the urban souvenir business. Focusing on the development of urban ethnic minority souvenir stalls run mostly by people belonging to the highland group of Akha, the author explains the spatial expansion of ethnic businesses and assesses the economic and political obstacles micro-entrepreneurs are confronted with. The book offers an understanding of the everyday practices and social relations of and between unequally powerful actors related to ethnic minority tourism in urban contexts, and systematically integrates individual and collective action into socio-economic and politico-institutional contexts. A significant contribution to migration and ethnic minority studies in the Thai and Asian urban tourism context, the book will be of interest to researchers in the fields of Southeast Asian studies, tourism, migration, and ethnic minority studies.

Thailand Travel Guide. Thai Tourism. Thailand remains one of the biggest centers of tourism in the world. Hot beaches, beautiful and diverse nature, and rich choice of places of interest let every traveler select a program to fit one's taste. Bangkok remains one of the most favorite destinations for travelers. Wat Pho or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha built in the 7th century is the main landmark of the central square. The 15 meter long statue of Buddha is the main decoration of the temple. The statue is decorated with mother of pearl and skillful carving. Walls of the temple feature amazing paintings that depict Buddha and his apprentices. There is a gallery on the temple territory, where visitors will see a collection of rare figurines. There are approximately 400 items in total. Travelers are recommended not to forget to visit the Royal Palace that has become the main symbol of the medieval culture. The building is located in the old district of Bangkok. Nowadays the palace is used to host important governmental meetings, religious ceremonies and other events. Luxurious halls and galleries are very interesting to observe, but the outside design of the former royal residence is no less striking. The Floating Market is one of the most unusual places in the capital. The only way to reach the market is to use a boat. There are many small canals in this part of the city, so instead of typical stalls there are rows of small boats completely filled with different goods. Souvenirs and seafood are the most typical goods sold here. Quite an interesting fact the majority of sellers on the market are women. They control these floating kiosks with ease and can move from one corner of the market to another during the day. From an archaeological point of view, Ban Chiang is the most interesting part of Thailand. In 1966, scientists found here the remains of an ancient settlement that belongs to the Bronze period. Ceramics and items made of bronze have become the most precious findings here. It's possible to see these priceless items in the local museum that is also known as one of the most frequently visited cultural centres in the country.
