Anna Katharine Green was the most famous and prolific writer of detective fiction in the United States prior to Dashiell Hammett. Her first novel, The Leavenworth Case, was the bestseller of 1878. Green is credited with a number of “firsts” within the mystery genre, including the gentleman murdered as he makes out his will and the icicle as murder weapon. She created the first female detectives in American fiction. Her amateur spinster sleuth, Amelia Butterworth, became the prototype for numerous women detectives to follow, including Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. Nosy, opinionated, and tenacious, Amelia Butterworth engages in a sustained rivalry with Ebenezer Gryce, a police detective. In the interaction between these characters, Green developed two more conventions adopted by future generations of mystery writers: the investigation as battle between the sexes and between the professional and the unexpectedly sharp, observant amateur. This volume presents two of Green’s Amelia Butterworth tales: That Affair Next Door (1897) and Lost Man’s Lane (1898).

Miss Amelia Butterworth (who was christened Araminta but feels that too weak and sentimental a name for a woman of her), a 50-something spinster, looks out her window at midnight and sees a man and a woman enter the darkened house of her vacationing next door neighbors. Though - she says - she is not an inquisitive woman, she continues to watch and sees the man leave alone. When the house is still dark the next day, she summons a policeman, and they find the body of an unknown woman. Discovering who she is and who killed her puts the purposeful Miss Butterworth in competition with Detective Ebenezer Gryce, still sleuthing at 77.

"The success of 'That Affair Next Door, ' Anna Katharine Green's latest novel, is something almost unprecedented. Of all the tales since 'The Leavenworth Case, ' this has had the greatest vogue--which is saying considerable, for Mrs. Rohlfs enjoys the distinction of being one of the most widely read authors in this country. 'That Affair Next Door, ' with its startling ingenuity, its sustained interest and its wonderful plot, shows that the author's hand has not lost its cunning, but has gained as the years go by."--Buffalo Inquirer.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to [email protected] This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via [email protected]

Readers who recall the self-satisfied sagacity of Amelia Butterworth, as evidenced in the unravelling of the mystery of That Affair Next Door, will be grateful to the creator of that worthy spinster for the invention of this 'second episode.' In Lost Man's Lane the author shows that she has lost none of her cunning in inventing an intricate and absorbing plot, and in unfolding it carefully bit by bit by the agency of her chosen hero or heroine. We have once more the friendly rivalry of Amelia Butterworth and Mr. Gryce, the aged detective inspector, working towards the same end--the solution of the mystery which gave the lane its name, and which made it to be shunned by nearly all the inhabitants of the village.
