That Shakespeherian Rag written by Terence Hawkes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

First published in 1986. This collection of essays focuses on the ways in which our society 'processes' Shakespeare and the purposes for which this seems to be done. The case is made by examining the work of four highly influential critics: A C Bradley, Walter Raleigh, T S Eliot and John Dover Wilson. Terence Hawkes asks whether, beyond the readings to which the plays may be subjected, there lies any final, authoritative or essential meaning to which we can ultimately turn, concluding that jazz music offers the most fruitful model for twentieth-century criticism.

Edmund Conti's book of poems is full of memories and meditations, jokes and puns, and threaded through with Shakespearean and other literary references. Its idiosyncratic title suggests all this, repeating Eliot's comment on "that Shakespeherian rag / It's so elegant / So intelligent." Conti divides the book into 11 sections, starting with memories of childhood and youth, and then weaving through reading and writing, books and poetry, his neighbors and family (and their views of his verse), into a closer and closer look at mortality: the last four pieces having respectively four lines, two lines, one line, and nothing. Engaging, amusing and thought-provoking. -Robin Helweg-Larsen I have been familiar with Ed Conti's work for many years so when I see his name, I know something good will follow. This book lives up to my expectations and delivers insight, wit, irony, perfectly rhymed poems and spot on prose. It's like a friendly handshake and a little peek into the world of Edmund Conti. I'm pleased to say that excerpts will linger in my long-term memory bank. -Pat D'Amico Reading Ed Conti's That Shakespeherian Rag reminds me of watching Luis Tiant pitch for the Red Sox in the '70s. By the time he reached Boston, El Tiante had turned his standard four pitch repertoire into what seemed like twenty different offerings by changing speeds and arm angles. An El Tiante of form and wordplay, Conti's book is a showcase for his mastery of everything from the sonnet and sestina to haiku, light verse, free verse and even a concrete poem, all with a wit that never fails to delight. From childhood remembrances to social commentary to just having fun with words, O O O O mixes and matches forms enough to keep Conti's readers on their toes and waiting for his next tantalizing verbal changeup or curve. -Tony Gruenewald

T S Eliot And The Cultural Divide written by David E. Chinitz and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12 with Literary Criticism categories.

The modernist poet T. S. Eliot has been applauded and denounced for decades as a staunch champion of high art and an implacable opponent of popular culture. But Eliot's elitism was never what it seemed. T. S. Eliot and the Cultural Divide refurbishes this great writer for the twenty-first century, presenting him as the complex figure he was, an artist attentive not only to literature but to detective fiction, vaudeville theater, jazz, and the songs of Tin Pan Alley. David Chinitz argues that Eliot was productively engaged with popular culture in some form at every stage of his career, and that his response to it, as expressed in his poetry, plays, and essays, was ambivalent rather than hostile. He shows that American jazz, for example, was a major influence on Eliot's poetry during its maturation. He discusses Eliot's surprisingly persistent interest in popular culture both in such famous works as The Waste Land and in such lesser-known pieces as Sweeney Agonistes. And he traces Eliot's long, quixotic struggle to close the widening gap between high art and popular culture through a new type of public art: contemporary popular verse drama. What results is a work that will persuade adherents and detractors alike to return to Eliot and find in him a writer who liked a good show, a good thriller, and a good tune, as well as a "great" poem.

Shakespearean Tragedy brings together fifteen major contemporary essays on individual plays and the genre as a whole. Each piece has been carefully chosen as a key intervention in its own right and as a representative of an influential critical approach to the genre. The collection as a whole, therefore, provides both a guide and explanation to the various ways in which contemporary criticism has determined our understanding of the tragedies, and the opportunity for assessing the wider issues such criticism raises. The collection begins by considering the impact of social semiotics on approaches to the tragedies, before moving on to deal, in turn, with the various forms of Marxist criticism, New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and Poststructuralism.

Shakespeare In The Present written by Terence Hawkes and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

Shakespeare in the Present is a stunning collection of essays by Terence Hawkes, which engage with, explain, and explore 'presentism'. Presentism is a critical manoeuvre which uses relevant aspects of the contemporary as a crucial trigger for its investigations. It deliberately begins with the material present and lets that set the interrogative agenda. This book suggests ways in which its principles may be applied to aspects of Shakespeare's plays. Hawkes concentrates on two main areas in which Presentism impacts on the study of Shakespeare. The first is the concept of 'devolution' in British politics. The second is presentism's commitment to a reversal of conceptual hierarchies such as primary/secondary and past/present, and the interaction between performance and reference. The result is to sophisticate and expand our notion of performing and to refocus interest on what the early modern theatre meant by the activity it termed 'playing'.
