One minute Jim Zervanos was carrying his one-year-old boy to a baseball game; the next, he was in the ER, where for days he lay in limbo, being strangled from the inside. Teams of the best doctors were stumped by his worsening condition, before telling him there was nothing they could do. That Time I Got Cancer: A Love Story is about experiencing joy even in desperate times. It's about the relationships that anchor us, even as they must be entirely redefined. At forty-one, married, with a young son, Jim said goodbye to his family. When a brilliant new surgeon performed a radical operation, Jim was diagnosed with lymphoma, which led to chemotherapy and an uncertain road to recovery. Five years would pass before Jim began to understand what he had endured. Through mortality and back to life, this is the inspiring journey of a man awakened to the full experience of being alive, and being present for it all.

When I was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in 2001, I was frozen in time. At that time, the only thing I knew about any cancer, is that if you have it, you die. I agonized over things like, am I going to dwindle away and die a painful death? How do I tell my kids? Do I have enough time to get things in order? Who will take care of my husband? My mind went on and on. I looked for someone to talk to who had been diagnosed with my stage of cancer. When I couldn't find any, I thought the worst. I was told that once people go through their ordeal with cancer, they don't want to talk about it. I got on my knees and promised God that if he got me through this, I would become that voice. Well he kept his end of the bargain, and I'm keeping mine. But the stories in this book are not just about me; they are about people who have fought and won their battles with every type and stage of cancer. In talking to them, I learned so much. The trauma one goes through from the beginning of the diagnosis to the end of the treatments makes it understandable that people want to forget it once it's over. But the people in this book wanted to share their stories to let anyone going through this to know it is not a death sentence, and more important-there is life after cancer! Belief in God, positive thinking, and a strong support system will see you through any trial. The stories in this book are also about the people who stand with us and fight for us in the battle against cancer. Without them, we wouldn't survive. So when you read these stories, look at not only the type of cancer they survived, but also the faith, love, and support they had. In some cases you will see how cancer changed their life for the better. So look at their lives post-cancer. Look at their strong, loving support system. When you feel depressed or feel like giving up, pick up this book and read one of the many inspirational stories. You'll learn not to be afraid of cancer; only be afraid if you don't do something about it. Then I guarantee, you too can become not just a survivor, but a Cancer Kickin' Warrior!

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST • This inspiring, exquisitely observed memoir finds hope and beauty in the face of insurmountable odds as an idealistic young neurosurgeon attempts to answer the question What makes a life worth living? NAMED ONE OF PASTE’S BEST MEMOIRS OF THE DECADE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • People • NPR • The Washington Post • Slate • Harper’s Bazaar • Time Out New York • Publishers Weekly • BookPage Finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award in Creative Nonfiction and the Books for a Better Life Award in Inspirational Memoir At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir. Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while working on this book, yet his words live on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I began to realize that coming face to face with my own mortality, in a sense, had changed nothing and everything,” he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel Beckett began to repeat in my head: ‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath Becomes Air is an unforgettable, life-affirming reflection on the challenge of facing death and on the relationship between doctor and patient, from a brilliant writer who became both.

Thank God I Got Cancer written by Angelina Assanti and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-18 with categories.

This book is a finalist for the 2016 Readers' Favorites Award. It was awarded a President's Award in Humor and another in Health for 2016 from the Florida Authors and Publisher's Association. From multiple award-winning author, Angelina Assanti, comes this humorous look at life as a cancer patient. From radical surgery to chemo and radiation, she's been through it all. Determined to keep her sense of humor, she reveals the difficulties cancer patients face when it comes to friends, families, co-workers and treatment. This book is a must-read for anyone who has been touched by this life-changing diagnosis. Readers' Favorite gave this book five stars and said,"Assanti's prose is beautiful and she knows how to connect with readers through her masterful use of humor." and book "Can be aptly described as hilarious, a rare gift to cancer patients and those who take care of people suffering with terminal illnesses." In July of 2015, Angelina learned that she had cervical cancer. When she went for treatment at the local cancer center, and entered the bookstore there, she noticed all that they sold were clinical books. When she asked the clerk at the shop why there weren't any humorous books about cancer, the lady scoffed at her and said no one would want a funny cancer book. Angelina said she was sick of reading educational books and wanted a funny cancer book. She knew if she couldn't get one, she had to write one! And after talking to many patients and health care providers in the building, she discovered they all wanted funny books about cancer too! The patients wanted to read them and the staff wanted to hand them out to their patients. Angelina describes what it's like to be a cancer patient and go through the procedures. Besides any physical changes involved, all cancer patients go through psychological changes. No matter if you have Stage I, Stage II, Stage III or Stage IV, every cancer patient experiences the same things. This is especially true when it comes to other people finding out and dealing with the disease. This book is also helpful to friends and families of the patient, so they can understand what someone with this diagnosis is going through. Though the subject is serious, because Angelina is a comedy writer, she has a hard time taking everything seriously. So, even people who don't have cancer enjoy the book and appreciate the humor.

Cancer is indiscriminate. It cares little for class, creed or color. Its patients are literally everywhere. When Laura Holmes Haddad was diagnosed, she discovered shelf upon shelf of overly-earnest, somber, gray survival books, and knew there had to be a better way. This Is Cancer is the thoughtful, informative fabulous-looking result for those who prefer their pathos with equal parts humor and reality and a touch of flair. A "what to expect when you're expecting" book for the diagnosis you don't want but are stuck with, This Is Cancer is the book that patients keep in their "heading to the hospital bag," because it's the only one that tells them what's going on and keeps them company. Including such useful snippets as: There is no limit to what you will put yourself through when told it might save your life. Stay away from the Internet. And don't let anyone tell you "what they looked up" about your diagnosis. You'll be surrounded by people but you'll feel lonely, and alone, sometimes. Lexapro is Tylenol for the soul. If you don't like your doctor(s), find new ones. You will feel somewhat at the mercy of them, like they hold the key to your mortality, but in fact more than one doctor can potentially save you and some are nice and some are mean. Whether you or your loved ones want a primer full of useful information in an easy to reference format or a friendly and comforting read, the honest, grave, and mordantly funny stories and tips from young survivors will bring you the real intel and advice that you need most during this tremendously difficult time.

On the 10th March 2017 with a single sentence my life changed, that sentence was "you have Cancer". To say this is a game changer is an understatement. Now don't get me wrong, no Cancer is glamourous, however having to tell people you have ass cancer is slightly humiliating. Now it stands to reason that if I was to ever get a Cancer, Colon Cancer was always likely to be the one for me. Years of people telling me that I was full of shit and a pain in the ass eventually was to change from an opinion of my character to a physical reality.Nothing could have prepared me for what was to come. The following year proved to be incredibly challenging for my family and I. I have throughout this book referred to this as a journey, aside from the obvious journey that is Cancer, it is a journey of self-discovery, one that has not been at all easy. While I talk a lot, I am generally not comfortable talking about how I feel, but I realised early on that I needed an outlet, somewhere to let my thoughts come out, so as with so many before me I decided to start a blog. This book is based on that blog. I started writing the blog with the thought that it may help anybody who has been diagnosed with Cancer and is currently going through the treatment, in the middle of treatment however I realised that it was likely to put the fear of God in anybody facing this journey. I want to emphasise that everybody's experience is not the same, each person reacts differently to chemotherapy, my experience with it was unpleasant however that was my experience and that does not mean it would be the same for somebody else. This book may help family and loved one's who are supporting somebody going through treatment for Cancer, my hope is it can provide some clarity on how you feel when you are going through this. It is an extremely difficult time for those supporting a Cancer patient, some insight into what they are going through may be helpful.

"By page three of the introduction to Everything Changes, I wanted not only to devour the rest of the book, but I wanted to call Kairol up, get to know her, and (if we weren't both already married) see if I could sleep with her. Then the book got really good. It is, without doubt, the most forthright, emotionally sophisticated, and plain-old valuable book of its kind I've seen. The book defines and exemplifies what the verb 'fight' really means: to arm, prepare, and engage in sustained effort to gain a desired end. If that's your mission, this is your instruction manual." —Evan Handler, actor and author of Time On Fire and It's Only Temporary: The Good News and the Bad News of Being Alive (and a guy who got well from acute myeloid leukemia in 1985) On a shoestring budget and with tape recorder in hand, Kairol Rosenthal emerged from treatment and hit the road in search of other twenty- and thirtysomething cancer survivors. From the Big Apple to the Bible Belt, she dusted the sugarcoating off of the young adult cancer experience, exposing the gritty and compelling stories of twenty-five complete strangers. The men and women in Everything Changes confess their most vulnerable moments, revealing cancer experiences they never told anyone else—everything from what they thought about at night before going to bed to what they wish they could tell their lovers but were too afraid to. With irreverent flare and practical wisdom, Everything Changes includes stories, how-to resources, and expert advice on issues that are important for young adult cancer patients, including: Dating and sex Medical insurance and the healthcare system Faith and spirituality Employment and career Fertility and adoption Friends and family
