Excerpt from The Community: First Steps in Sociology Thomas had heard something, it is true, about hard times on the farm, There was that very bad time when two successive seasons of wet weather ruined the wheat and hay crops, and the potato crop failed. There was much suffering over the whole countryside; and there was no government relief. People helped one another as much as they could. In the churches, the clergymen prayed for rain. Leaving Thomas for the present to his reflections, let us compare his plight with that of his progenitor, farmer Barnes, when hard times occurred. The farmer knew exactly where the trouble lay and what would remove it. His clergyman prayed for rain. Thomas was far from seeing clearly what was at the root of his difficulties, though he spent a good deal of his time making bitter guesses on the subject. His clergyman could not help him. The farmer knew that, if he could only hold out for a time, the weather would right itself; Thomas could only hope for something to happen - he knew not what. Communities can be of different kinds, and exist at different levels in society. What kind of community is valuable at the level of the state and what is its significance for communities above and below that level? This book systematically explores the limits that ideals of political community place on cultural diversity within the state, and the limits that, in turn, ideals of global community place on the self-determination of political communities. It will be of interest to students of political theory, philosophy and international relations.

The Unavowable Community written by Maurice Blanchot and has been published by Station Hill Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Unavowable Community is an inquiry into the nature and possibility of community, asking whether there can be a community of individuals that is truly "communal." The problem, for Blanchot, is that the very terms of an ideal community make an "avowal" of membership in it a violation of the terms themselves. This meditation ranges from the problematic effects of a defect in language to actual historical experiments in community. The latter involves the life and work of George Bataille whose concerns (e.g. "the negative community") occupy the foreground of Blanchot's discussion. Taking as his point of departure an essay by French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy, Blanchot appears once again as one of the most attentive readers of what is truly challenging in French thought. His deep interest in the fiction of Marguerite Duras extends this inquiry to include "The Community of Lovers," emerging from certain themes in Duras' recit, The Malady of Death. As Blanchot's first direct treatment of a subject that has long figured in or behind his work, this small but highly concentrated book stands as an important addition to his own contribution to literary, philosophical, social, and political thought, figuring as it does at the center of the emerging concern for a redefinition of politics and community. Readers of Blanchot know not to expect answers to the great questions that move his thought - rather, to live with the questions at the new level to which they have been raised in his discourse.
