Lists, one of the most archaic literary genres, stand behind many of our complex mental or rhetorical structures and they often influence the way we conceptualize the world (even if we are unaware of it). They seem plain but may conceal a complicated inner logic. They are agrammatical but may tell a story. Their basic features – selection, order, and layout – may be enough to give them enormous power: by including they exclude, by ordering they create a hierarchy, by taking on particular physical aspects they place themselves into a specific context. These and other issues are discussed in the present transdisciplinary volume collecting the best revised contributions to a workshop on lists held at the Center for Theoretical Study in Prague in November 2008. Each of the 13 articles by researchers from seven countries provides a case study on the subject of list. The fields covered include late antique, medieval and early modern history, philology, philosophy, cognitive and computer science. The contributors aim both at presenting particular cases – specific lists or list-types – and, at the same time, at addressing methodological issues: exploring the ways of researching lists in their particular disciplines, formulating relevant research themes and questions, contextualizing the subject. Since theoretical discourse on lists has not been established yet, this volume should be seen as a first step in the process, showing the variety of possible research directions on a transdisciplinary level, and raising interest in the topic, which, although it may seem a bit obscure at first, has indeed a lot to offer.

Programming Languages: An Active Learning Approach introduces students to three programming paradigms: object-oriented/imperative languages using C++ and Ruby, functional languages using Standard ML, and logic programming using Prolog. This interactive textbook is intended to be used in and outside of class. Each chapter follows a pattern of presenting a topic followed by a practice exercise or exercises that encourage students to try what they have just read. This textbook is best-suited for students with a 2-3 course introduction to imperative programming. Key Features: (1) Accessible structure guides the student through various programming languages. (2) Seamlessly integrated practice exercises. (3) Classroom-tested. (4) Online support materials. Advance praise: “The Programming Languages book market is overflowing with books, but none like this. In many ways, it is precisely the book I have been searching for to use in my own programming languages course. One of the main challenges I perpetually face is how to teach students to program in functional and logical languages, but also how to teach them about compilers. This book melds the two approaches very well.” -- David Musicant, Carleton College

For professional practitioners in the human services to successfully fulfill their important job roles they must be highly motivated. In many human service agencies, however, practitioners encounter situations that can seriously impede their motivation to work diligently as well as reduce their enjoyment on the job. For example, working with limited resources, unrealistic caseloads, problematic supervision, or interfering events beyond an agency’s control (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic) can all reduce practitioner motivation and work enjoyment. This book describes how human service practitioners can achieve and maintain self-motivation to be professionally productive and experience enjoyment on the job during both the best and worst of times. Self-motivation is presented in terms of practitioners actively using strategies developed through research and application in behavior analysis and therapy to promote their work productivity and enjoyment. Self-motivation strategies presented are likewise based on the specific advice of highly successful practitioners in the human services. Some strategies presented are robust in nature, in that they can be applied across varying situations to promote self-motivation and enhance overall quality of work life. Other strategies are more situation-specific, being tailored to overcoming particular obstacles to motivation that practitioners often face in human service agencies. The intent of this book is to provide practical information that effectively equips practitioners to be in control of their work motivation and thereby work consistently in a manner that is professionally productive and personally enjoyable.

This volume covers the numerous small lists of feasts that occur mainly on stelae and in tombs. A chronological study is presented wherein the major phases of Pharaonic Egypt (Old Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period) are covered. Questions of dating these inscriptions as well as reasons concerning alterations in the lists form a major part of the discussion. In particular, differences in arrangement of these private celebrations both within a specific time period as well as between eras provide causes for the alterations of religious patterns of a non-royal sort. Calendrical ideas are likewise surveyed although for the most part the aim of this study remains focused upon the religious events themselves.Material of an ancillary nature (including some data from royal inscriptions) will be found only when they provide light upon the private religious practices.

From The Heart written by Jeffrey L. Kosky and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-25 with Religion categories.
What does it mean to have a heart? How does it feel when a heart fails, and what does it take to recover? In a world beset by never-ending crises—personal and collective, local and global—is heartlessness the only option? From the Heart weaves together a personal narrative of a life-threatening ailment with considerations of philosophy, art, and science to contemplate ultimate questions: matters of life and death. Jeffrey L. Kosky recounts his brush with death—the surgical repair of a congenital defect in his aortic valve—his gradual recovery of everyday life, and his struggle to find the heart to go on throughout it all. To make sense of the experience, he immerses himself in humanistic inquiry and medical science—the histories of medicine, cardiac surgery, and knowledge of the human heart as well as the works of artists, writers, philosophers, and theologians. Writing about the experience of being human from the precarious position of his own woundedness, Kosky shares hard-earned perspectives on what matters most. Combining moving memoir, encounters with major authors and artists, and heartfelt reflections on the “big questions” of existence, this elegantly written book is at once erudite and powerful. It shows us why the heart—in physical, emotional, and metaphorical senses—helps us come to terms with sickness and health, dying and living.

The only how-to guide offering a unified, systemic approach to acquiring, cleaning, and managing data in R Every experienced practitioner knows that preparing data for modeling is a painstaking, time-consuming process. Adding to the difficulty is that most modelers learn the steps involved in cleaning and managing data piecemeal, often on the fly, or they develop their own ad hoc methods. This book helps simplify their task by providing a unified, systematic approach to acquiring, modeling, manipulating, cleaning, and maintaining data in R. Starting with the very basics, data scientists Samuel E. Buttrey and Lyn R. Whitaker walk readers through the entire process. From what data looks like and what it should look like, they progress through all the steps involved in getting data ready for modeling. They describe best practices for acquiring data from numerous sources; explore key issues in data handling, including text/regular expressions, big data, parallel processing, merging, matching, and checking for duplicates; and outline highly efficient and reliable techniques for documenting data and recordkeeping, including audit trails, getting data back out of R, and more. The only single-source guide to R data and its preparation, it describes best practices for acquiring, manipulating, cleaning, and maintaining data Begins with the basics and walks readers through all the steps necessary to get data ready for the modeling process Provides expert guidance on how to document the processes described so that they are reproducible Written by seasoned professionals, it provides both introductory and advanced techniques Features case studies with supporting data and R code, hosted on a companion website A Data Scientist's Guide to Acquiring, Cleaning and Managing Data in R is a valuable working resource/bench manual for practitioners who collect and analyze data, lab scientists and research associates of all levels of experience, and graduate-level data mining students.
