These proceedings include most of the available information on this major seismic event and its consequences. With an estimated moment magnitude of 7.7 and a heavy toll in terms of human and economic losses, it ranks as the largest intermediate-depth earthquake in Europe in the twentieth century. Nevertheless, because of the difficult conditions in the 1940s, the lessons learnt after the Vrancea earthquake were not extensively shared with the international scientific community and thus, this book fills a gap in the literature discussing the knowledge acquired after major disasters. Past experience together with current understanding of the 1940 Vrancea earthquake are presented along with the latest information on Romanian seismicity, seismic hazard and risk assessment, and seismic evaluation and rehabilitation of buildings and structures. Moreover, it includes excerpts from Romanian post-disaster reports and textbooks concerning the earthquake.

Disaster Response By Ceau Escu S Communist Regime In Romania written by Karin Steinbrueck and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-21 with Science categories.
This book contains the first comprehensive history using extensive primary sources to trace the 1977 earthquake disaster response by the Ceauşescu communist regime, contextualizing its contribution to the public risk that remains in Romania's capital Bucharest. It traces a history of one authoritarian government’s disaster response linking its decisions and ultimate inactions to contemporary public risk. The book begins with a stand-alone chapter to introduce readers to twentieth-century Communist Romania and contextualize the Ceauşescu regime’s response. It provides insights into how Radio Free Europe filled the information vacuum, how the political police, the Securitate, worked as first responders, and how scientific experts debated the best course of action. It examines how the regime requested specific foreign assistance and activated its Securitate abroad to encourage such, prioritized restoration of the economy, and "encouraged" domestic cash and labor contributions in the name of recovery. The book examines how the disaster response abruptly ended, leaving thousands of structurally unsafe buildings. It explains the contemporary seismic risk and post-communist mitigation efforts to reduce it. This book will be of interest to students, researchers, and policy-makers in the fields of history, disaster studies, urban planning, politics, and those interested in communist-era Romania, Europe, and Eurasia; totalitarian and authoritarian regimes.

Published as part of EDERA - The Ethos of Dialogue and Education, streamlining the themes Negotiating between objectivity and stereotypes. American correspondents in Romania (T3) and Embodying the American Feminine Ethos: Renegotiating Romanian Women’s Identity from Hollywood to Rockefeller (T6). Trailblazers of the Press. American War Correspondents in Interwar Romania analyzes the portrayals of Romania shaped by the American war correspondents’ who visited the country during the interwar era. These representations illustrate the cultural and identity negotiation process between the observers and the observed and among the many prevalent identities in this space. The historical and political analysis of America’s stance towards Romania in the context of the world wars has been thoroughly addressed in both the American and Romanian academia. This book emphasizes the historical context of Romanian-American relationships and negotiations and the cultural, social, gender and identity dimensions reflected in the American correspondents’ representations of significant historical events, especially from 1939 to 1940, when they arrived in Romania in considerable numbers. Trailblazers of the Press explores a topic often neglected in Romania’s historical narrative. It highlights the crucial role of American journalists in documenting social, cultural, and historical events in Romania during World War II within a European context. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the Romanian people’s cultural and social aspects by offering valuable historical, military, and diplomatic insights. “This book challenges the accepted belief regarding the irrelevant influence of the United States in interwar Romania, providing significant knowledge for a detailed analysis of the way America portrayed Romania. The book aims to remedy the information deficiencies about foreign war correspondence, diaries, and accounts of those who visited or lived for a time in interwar Romania, proving the special American interest in this cultural and identity space.” Cornel Sigmirean, author of Istoria formării intelectualităţii româneşti din Transilvania şi Banat în epoca modernă. Studenţi români la universități din Europa Centrală şi de Vest “This book analyzes the intricate Romanian-American relations in the inter-war era through the lenses of American war correspondents in Romania (while investigating their diaries, memoirs and other testimonies), with a view to showing that the evolution of such relations, influenced by the US political and economic interests in the region, can shed novel light on the inherent power dynamics of the Romanian-American exchanges.” Mariana Neț, author of Once Upon Two Cities: A Parallel Between New York City and Bucharest by 1900 “This is a must-read book for anyone who seeks to understand how American war reporting in interwar Romania negotiated the ebb and flow of information transmission in order to uncover the power dynamics between the two countries. Trailblazers of the Press provides a fascinating multidisciplinary account of Romania’s diplomatic and cultural exchanges with America, which is central to our contemporary history.” Elena Butoescu, author of Literary Imposture and Eighteenth-Century Knowledge

As a political model for the young democracy in interwar Romania, as a protector against threats to the sovereignty and integrity of the state, as a cultural model, and as a daily life, America represented for Romania a reference point, a factor of stability and progress. America was a model and ally of the civilized world! Unfortunately, isolated in the interwar period from the political realities on the continent, America saw how, at the end of the ‘30s, the political creation of the Paris Peace Conference collapsed, the US being invited to “abandon jazz” to enter a new war on the European continent, extended to Asia and Africa, to save civilization, alongside the UK. At the war’s end, Eastern Europe fell victim to communist totalitarianism imposed by the USSR, and its peoples were forced to abandon the Western model of civilization in favor of the communist model. However, after 45 years of communism, the American model became negotiable again as a cultural, economic, and political model for Romanians, allowing us to reconstruct essential pages in the history of interwar Romania in the context of Romanian- American relations. This book presents state-of-the-art knowledge on problems of the effects of structural irregularities on their seismic response. It also covers specific spatial and rotational seismic loads on these structures. Rapid progress in respective research on irregular structures and unconventional seismic loads requires prompt updates of the state of the art in this area. These problems are of particular interest to both researchers and practitioners because these are non-conservative effects compared with the approach of the traditional seismic design (e.g. Eurocode 8, Uniform Building Code etc.). This book will be of particular interest to researchers, PhD students and engineers dealing with design of structures under seismic excitations.

Eine Reise Durch Die Erdgeschichte written by Hermann Sicius and has been published by Springer-Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-03-29 with Science categories.
