This series depicts the events of the twentieth century in a novel way. Fascinating black-and-white photographs from the Getty Images collection put images of the power of an event or the zaniness of new trends right before the viewers' eyes. The force of wars and political conflicts is just as important a theme in these comprehensive volumes as world-shaking innovations in science and technology. These are accompanied by portraits of great personalities in art, politics, and society. The lives of everyday people with their (at the time) common and not-so-common curiosities also com-prise an extensive part of each book: sailing on roller skates in 1929, painted-on nylon stockings in 1947, or a dry cleaner's where the charge for miniskirts varies according to their length SELLING POINTS: * The most fascinating images of a decade in one volume * Clearly organised according to major themes like Politics, Pop, Art, or Sports * Impressive photographs of famous personalities, events, and trends over the course of a decade * Commentary on each picture (English/German/French) * Introductory texts give an overview of each theme in three languages

The 40s The Story Of A Decade written by The New Yorker Magazine and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-06 with History categories.

This captivating anthology gathers historic New Yorker pieces from a decade of trauma and upheaval—as well as the years when The New Yorker came of age, with pieces by Elizabeth Bishop, Langston Hughes, Joseph Mitchell, Vladimir Nabokov, and George Orwell, alongside original reflections on the 1940s by some of today’s finest writers. In this enthralling book, contributions from the great writers who graced The New Yorker’s pages are placed in historical context by the magazine’s current writers. Included in this volume are seminal profiles of the decade’s most fascinating figures: Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Here are classics in reporting: John Hersey’s account of the heroism of a young naval lieutenant named John F. Kennedy; Rebecca West’s harrowing visit to a lynching trial in South Carolina; and Joseph Mitchell’s imperishable portrait of New York’s foremost dive bar, McSorley’s. This volume also provides vital, seldom-reprinted criticism, as well as an extraordinary selection of short stories by such writers as Shirley Jackson and John Cheever. Represented too are the great poets of the decade, from William Carlos Williams to Langston Hughes. To complete the panorama, today’s New Yorker staff look back on the decade through contemporary eyes. The 40s: The Story of a Decade is a rich and surprising cultural portrait that evokes the past while keeping it vibrantly present. Including contributions by W. H. Auden • Elizabeth Bishop • John Cheever • Janet Flanner • John Hersey • Langston Hughes • Shirley Jackson • A. J. Liebling • William Maxwell • Carson McCullers • Joseph Mitchell • Vladimir Nabokov • Ogden Nash • John O’Hara • George Orwell • V. S. Pritchett • Lillian Ross • Stephen Spender • Lionel Trilling • Rebecca West • E. B. Hollywood movies are famous for promoting negative stereotypes of all kinds, especially against minorities, women, Southerners, and Christians. To what extent are biographical films selected for production according to certain biases, conscious or unconscious, among the Hollywood elite? An expert on the U.S. film industry gives readers brief synopses of Hollywood biopics produced and/ or released from 1912 through 1994. This survey provides the basis for discussion and analysis. Tracking these one-sided depictions over a longer period of time, the patterns of bias - and the source of the problem - become more clear. The problem appears to be that most of the people who have green-light authority in the U.S. film industry - for either the production and/or distribution of a motion picture - share a common ethnic/religious/cultural background. Thus, the stories of their own cohort and those of all other ethnic, religious and/or cultural groups (whose members seldom achieve positions of power in Hollywood) are being filtered through the cultural sensibilities of a single group. John Cones suggests that the solution could lie in increasing diversity at the highest levels in the U.S. film industry.

The cultural and political history of the watershed decade of the 20th century, as told by the New Yorker. The 1940s were a decade of upheaval and innovation: they saw the Nuremberg Trials and Israeli statehood, Casablanca and Duke Ellington, smallpox and skyscrapers, FDR and Le Corbusier, zoot suits and Christian Dior. It was also the decade the New Yorker came of age. The same magazine offered its readers the first reporting from Hiroshima and introduced the world to Holden Caulfield, while counting John Hersey, Rebecca West, E.B. White, and Joseph Mitchell among its regular writers. In this volume, pieces by the pantheon of journalists, novelists and poets that graced the New Yorker's pages in the 1940s are complemented by all new contributions, as the magazine's present star lineup looks back at that tumultuous decade. Here is a book that will enthrall, inform and entertain any history fan in your life.
