"Recognised as a classic in the field, this book is a pioneering study dealing with the traditional rationale behind the 613 commandments, or mitzvot, in the Torah. The author draws on the considerable literature to present the interpretation of the great rabbinical thinkers on each biblical commandment throughout the ages. Excerpts from the key commentaries are given in English translation. The book provides easy reference for the student interested in the systematic study of the mitzvot and for anyone interested in additional information on a particular commandment. Review: "This work presents, in digest form, each and every perspective of every one of the 613 Commandments... and can well be used as a weekly study of the biblical portion. Rabbi Chill's endeavor is to be highly commended and recommended." - COPAC.

There are a whole lot more than only 10 Commandments found in the Old Testament, there are 613 Commandments! Below is a list of the 613 mitzvot commandments (mitzvot is plural, mitzvah is singular). There are both "positive" and "negative" mitzvot (do's and don'ts) which can be divided into: 365 Negative Mitzvot - (To remind us not to do bad things every day of the year) plus 248 Positive Mitzvot - (The number of bones in the human body - for a total of 613). In this way, the Hebrews and the Jewish people were able to obey the mitzvot with their entire body. It is important to know that while God gave us many commands to follow, including the famous Ten Commandments, He did not abolish the Law of Moses found in the Torah (the first five Books of the Bible). The following commandments are superseded by the new covenant of grace. The Law is God's Divine Instructions in Righteousness without which man would have NO blueprint for; Moral, Holy Living Jesus Christ forbids us from thinking that he came to "abolish the law or the prophets." These were rabbinical, man-made opinions and traditions that kept people in bondage. Neither He nor His apostles ever spoke against the Law nor suggested that after Jesus' death the Torah was to become null and void. The Apostle Paul said, "Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law." (Romans 3:31) 248 positive Mitzvot / Commandments ("the Do's") 365 negative ones ("the Don'ts").

As many of you may already know Judaism has a strong tradition and history of questioning, debating and arguing. As a result there is no official list of the mitzvot as it seems to differ from source to source, however, it is largely agreed and accepted that the list of mitzvot compiled by Maimonides is the accepted list, as compiled in the Mishnah Torah, other sources have also been consulted in the development of this book. What follows below is the mitzvot based on Maimonides interpretation and compilation. In this book we have compiled the mitzvot into a handy guide that has been split into different sections to help further categorise the mitzvot.
