The 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry suffered the second highest number of battle deaths of all the Union regiments, in every theater, throughout the course of the Civil War. They endured decimation at the battles of the Seven Days, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Nevertheless, this hardy and determined unit was able to overcome loss, defeat and heartache through their enduring defense and preservation of the Union line during the pivotal battle of Gettysburg. This book offers the first-ever comprehensive history of the 83rd Pennsylvania. It combines official war records, personal remembrances of veterans of the regiment, information derived from opposing Confederates, and secondary sources to produce a remarkable story of leadership, endurance, hardship and triumph. Actions and events are analyzed from multiple viewpoints. Overall, a detailed and thorough picture is offered of the 83rd's contribution to the preservation of the Union and defeats.

The 96th Pennsylvania Volunteers infantry regiment was formed in 1861—its ranks filled by nearly 1,200 Irish and German immigrants from Schuylkill County responding to Lincoln’s call for troops. The men saw action for three years with the Army of the Potomac’s VI Corps, participating in engagements at Gaines’ Mill, Crampton’s Gap, Salem Church and Spotsylvania. Drawing on letters, diaries, memoirs and other accounts, this comprehensive history documents their combat service from the point of view of the rank-and-file soldier, along with their views on the war, slavery, emancipation and politics.

The 149th Pennsylvania saw its one day of glory on July 1, 1863, when this young and untried regiment staged a magnificent defense at McPherson's farm. Although this bright promise quickly faded into more typical regimental experience, the story of the regiment's service under the indomitable Joshua Chamberlain remains worth telling. Drawing on the service records of more than 800 soldiers as well as diaries, letters, and other primary souces, this book details the 149th's battles from brigade to company level, from the charges at Gettsyburg to the assault at Petersburg. Focus is on the development, mood and character of a regiment as it undergoes changes in leadership, loss of reliable veterans and the increased individual desire for survival as brutal battles take their toll on mind and body. More than 100 photographs enhance the text.

Excerpt from History of the First Battalion Pennsylvania Six Months Volunteers and 187th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry: Six Months and Three Years Service, Civil War, 1863-1865 This volume contains the history of the One Hundred and Eighty-seventh Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. This work needs no apology. It contains no wonderful exploit; but a simple story of the service of the Regiment, which has been written with but one end in view, that is to do justice to all. No doubt, many other Regiments performed more brilliant service; but none bore more faithful allegiance to the great cause of the Constitution and the Union. In the qualities that make good soldiers - discipline, respect for superiors, perfection in drill, cleanliness, steadiness under fire, freedom from pillage, and manly endurance, under all the trying vicissitudes of war - the men of the 187th Pennsylvania Regiment had no superiors. This work has been made up from the diaries of the following members of the Regiment: Captain John E. Reilly, Lieutenant Samuel C. Ilgenfritz and Frederick K. Ployer, and from the personal recollections of the writer. We have also consulted Bates' History of the Pennsylvania Volunteers and the History of the 150th Regiment P. V., which was attached to the same Brigade. We are also under obligation to Major George W. Merrick, Lieutenant Frank J. Deemer and Lieutenant Jonathan J. Jessup for valuable assistance.
