Who says facts can't be fun? This book was written for those who are of a conservative mind set but are still wandering aimlessly in the world of politics and do not have a clue as to the policies, missions and distinct differences between the Democratic and Republican parties. Infusing sarcastic political satire into the fray, the author has created a manifesto which is quite humorous yet extremely informative. An absolute must for those who have their hearts in the right place but have the political I.Q. of a salamander!

This revised edition of ABCs is a lively and accessible introduction to modern political economy. Informed by the work of Marx, Veblen, Kalecki, Robinson, Minsky and other great political economists, Robin Hahnel provides the essential tools needed to understand economic issues today. Dispelling myths about financial liberalisation, fiscal austerity, globalisation and free markets, the ABCs offers a critical perspective on our present system and outlines clear alternatives for the future. This second edition applies the analytical tools developed to help readers understand the origins of the financial crisis of 2007, the ensuing 'Great Recession,' and why government policies in Europe and North America over the past six years have failed to improve matters for the majority of their citizens. The second edition also helps explain what is causing climate change and what will be required if it is to be resolved effectively and fairly.

The ABC of Communism is a book written by Nikolai Bukharin and Evgenii Preobrazhensky in 1919, during the Russian Civil War. Originally written to convince the proletariat of Russia to support the Bolsheviks, it became "an elementary textbook of communist knowledge". It became the best known and most widely circulated of all pre-Stalinist expositions of Bolshevism and the most widely read political work in Soviet Russia. Long out of print, and often only being available with the abridged first few chapters, this version includes completed new transcriptions of the last eight chapters along with the Programme of the Communist Party of Russia, a glossary, and a new word index. The ABC of Communism is written to be a systematic description of communism and the proletarian condition under capitalism, away from the reality of Soviet life, into a redirection towards a militant optimism on the horizon. This book in the Radical Reprint series from Pattern Books is made to be accessible and as close to manufacturing cost as possible.

The remarkable run of self-proclaimed "democratic socialist" Bernie Sanders for president of the United States has prompted-for the first time in decades and to the shock of many-a national conversation about socialism. A New York Times poll in late November found that a majority of Democrats had a favorable view of socialism, and in New Hampshire in February, more than half of Democratic voters under 35 told the Boston Globe they call themselves socialists. It's unclear exactly what socialism means to this generation, but couple with the ascendancy of longtime leftwinger Jeremy Corbyn to the leadership of the Labour Party in the UK, it's clear there's a historic, generational shift underway. This book steps into this moment to offer a clear, accessible, informative, and irreverent guide to socialism for the uninitiated. Written by young writers from the dynamic magazine Jacobin, alongside several distinguished scholars, The ABCs of Socialism answers basic questions, including ones that many want to know but might be afraid to ask ("Doesn't socialism always end up in dictatorship?", "Will socialists take my Kenny Loggins records?"). Disarming and pitched to a general readership without sacrificing intellectual depth, this will be the best introduction an idea whose time seems to have come again.

Excerpt from The A B C of the Government of the United States THE idea of government in the United States in its three phases - National, State and Local - is one of zones. If the whole frame of government is broadly viewed, it will be seen that it consists of self-governing zones. The smallest zone is that around the individual in his home affairs; then come successive zones until the outer circle of the Federal Government is reached. Under nationalist rule, divisions and subdivisions are formed for the purpose of more convenient administration. These are subordinate and largely executive districts. The United States is composed of numerous, and in a degree absolutely, self-governing units. Every division of government in the United States has certain exclusive powers which, within their legitimate limits, are not to be interfered with by any other power. Sources of Power The State is the original source of power; it has given certain of its inherent powers to the United States by the Federal Constitution and it has delegated certain other powers to its own smaller divisions - the County, and the Township or City. The underlying idea is that broader functions shall be given to greater entities and smaller functions shall be given to smaller entities so that each individual may have a large part in the affairs which are nearest to him while bigger community matters shall be transferred to larger units.
