If the "point" is that we were created to enjoy an intimate relationship with God and the practical outflow of that relationship is abiding, then abiding in Christ is arguably one of the most significant teachings in Scripture. Even though the terminology is exclusive to John's Gospel and his epistles, the principles of abiding are the practice of all of the major characters in the stories of the Bible. God's purpose is as unchanging as he is.We will begin our study in the focal text where Jesus defines abiding: John 15. It will become very clear as we study the context of the teachings on abiding that Jesus was revealing not only its significance for the dis-ciples but also its historical and future significance. Take a look at the context of the teaching.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love, even as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. – John 15:10 God will not honor the person who is not obedient. For us to have favor with God, obedience is of utmost importance. To obey is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22). This is evident from the very beginning of the Bible to the very end: Blessed are they that do His commandments, that they may have a right to the tree of life (Revelation 22:14). From Paradise lost to Paradise regained, the necessity for obedience remains the same. It is only obedience that restores access to the tree of life and favor with God. While the original disobedience was the cause of humanity's fall, through the obedience of Christ to the Father, and through our obedience to Christ, we can once again be restored. Although he was the Son of God, yet he learned obedience by the things which he suffered; and being made perfect, he became the author of eternal saving health unto all those that hearken unto him (Hebrews 5:8-9). Let this study awaken in you an earnest desire to fully know God’s will concerning this truth. Let us unite in praying that the Holy Spirit will show us how defective the Christian’s life is in which obedience does not rule everything. Let us desire to learn how that life can be exchanged for one of full surrender to absolute obedience, and how certain it is that God, through Christ, will enable us to live it out. List of Chapters 1. Obedience – What Bible Says About It 2. The Obedience of Christ 3. Obtaining the Desire to Obey 4. Preparing to Obey 5. Intentional Obedience 6. Obedience and Faith 7. Willing Obedience 8. Obedience to the Great Commission

Why obedience to God is so vital and how it nourishes one's faith. "For Him as for us, the only way under heaven to abide in divine love is to keep the commandments. Do let me ask, have you known it, have you heard it preached, have you believed it and proved it true in your experience: obedience on earth is the key to a place in God's love in heaven? Unless there be some correspondence between God's whole-hearted love in heaven, and our whole-hearted, loving obedience on earth, Christ cannot manifest Himself to us, God cannot abide in us, we cannot abide in His love." -Andrew Murray The Father in heaven asks, and requires, and actually expects, that every child of His yield Him whole-hearted and entire obedience, day by day, and all the day. To enable His child to do this, He has made a most abundant and altogether sufficient provision in the promise of the New Covenant, and in the gift of His Son and Spirit. This provision can alone, but can most certainly, be enjoyed, and these promises fulfilled, in the soul that gives itself up to a life in the abiding communion with the Three-One God, so that His presence and power work in it all the day. The very entrance into this life demands the vow of absolute obedience, or the surrender of the whole being, to be, think, speak, do, every moment, nothing but what is according to the will of God, and well-pleasing to Him. If these things be indeed true, it is not enough to assent to them: we need the Holy Spirit to give us such a vision of their glory and divine power, and the demand they make on our immediate and unconditional submission, that there may be no rest till we accept all that God is willing to do for us. Let us all pray that God may, by the light of His Spirit, so show His loving and almighty will concerning us, that it may be impossible for us to be disobedient to the heavenly vision. CONTENTS: PREFACE Chapter 1 - OBEDIENCE: ITS PLACE IN HOLY SCRIPTURES Chapter 2 - THE OBEDIENCE OF CHRIST Chapter 3 - THE SECRET OF TRUE OBEDIENCE Chapter 4 - THE MORNING WATCH IN THE LIFE OF OBEDIENCE Chapter 5 - THE ENTRANCE TO THE LIFE OF FULL OBEDIENCE Chapter 6 - THE OBEDIENCE OF FAITH Chapter 7 - THE SCHOOL OF OBEDIENCE Chapter 8 - OBEDIENCE TO THE LAST COMMAND Chapter 9 - NOTES ON THE MORNING WATCH

Jesus demonstrated complete submission to the Father's will to the point of His confident assertion, "I always do those things that please My Father" (John 8:29). He gave Himself in humility at Calvary to satisfy God's wrath against all sin, as well as all sinners, and declared from the cross, "It is finished." He then experienced death but rose in victory over death, thus proving His claims to divinity and giving to all His spiritual descendants resurrection power for daily living. So what is to be our response to all Christ Jesus is and all that He has suffered and accomplished on our behalf? What should be our life's focus, our objective, our agenda, and our passion? Obedience to the things our Lord and Savior has commanded. Obedience is our duty, to be sure, but it is more than that. It is the way we express our thanksgiving for what Christ has done for us. It is gratefulness lived out on a daily basis. This kind of living involves a consistent orientation toward laying aside personal or selfish desires and agendas that bring us temporal gratification. Instead, we embrace what Jesus Christ tells us to do: to proclaim the gospel of hope to those who know it not. This is the highest expression of gratefulness from a life made new by the living Lord. Your culture, your communities, your friends, your co-workers, and your family members need to hear a word from God. You and I are the delivery persons for God's message. We are the spokespersons for the gospel of Jesus Christ! We are the ones to whom God has said, "Arise, go to Nineveh." Our Nineveh, dear people of God, is the lost people around us.

William Kelly (1821-1906) was much more than a Brethren theologian who was a leader of the Moderate Exclusive Brethren movement, and also much more than an indiscriminate follower of John Nelson Darby (1800-1882). He was highly regarded not only within the Brethren but also by Christian leaders of other denominations. In this book Dr. Critchlow examines Kelly's lively and scholarly appraisal of the German "School of Higher Criticism" and his commentary on a range of works of contemporary Anglican and non-conformist theologians. She argues that Kelly's exegesis was meticulous and scholarly and demonstrated his understanding of the whole canon of Scripture. Despite his ecclesiology, his theology was nuanced and cannot easily be stereotyped. As an expositor of the controversial topics, "the Atonement" and "the After-Life," he can be described as a Biblical literalist, but in his understanding of Biblical language and literary genre and philosophy, he can be seen as a conservative intellectual. While belonging to the evangelical school of thought, his theology shows itself to be much more complex than many of his evangelical contemporaries and gives him links with later Christian traditions. Through his deep spirituality, Kelly can inspire the reader's own spiritual aspirations.
