Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,7, University of Trento, course: Gestione delle risorse humane, language: English, abstract: The term of absenteeism is generally used to describe unscheduled employee absences from the workplace. But there are two different categories. Either - valid absenteeism: refers to employees who are absent for reasons beyond their control; like sickness and injury. In a labour relations context this means that it can not be remedied or treated by disciplinary measures. - invalid absenteeism:refers to employees who are absent without authorization for reasons which are within their control. For instance, an employee who is on sick leave even though he/she is not sick, and it can be proven that the employee was not sick, is guilty of culpable absenteeism. In a labour relations context this means that progressive discipline can be applied. or more elaborated - white absenteeism: In the case of white absenteeism, the employee is obviously ill. For example if he or she has high fever or a broken leg. - grey absenteeism: Illnesses which are psychological or psychosomatic, such as headache, stomachache or tiredness can lead to grey absenteeism because in these cases, diagnoses are hard to make. - black absenteeism: it is spoken about black absenteeism if someone who is not ill has reported himself/herself as sick. This black variant of absenteeism is often also called illegal absenteeism. In the cases of black and grey absenteeism exists a degree of freedom to absenteeism.

Work absence is an important part of the individual decision on actual working hours. This paper focuses on sickness absence in Europe and develops a stylized model where absence is part of the labor-leisure decision made by workers and the production decision made by profit-maximizing firms, with insurance provisions and labor market institutions affecting the costs of absence. The results from a panel of 18 European countries indicate that absence is increased by generous insurance schemes where employers bear little responsibility for their costs. Shorter working hours reduce absence, but flexible working arrangements are preferable if labor supply erosion is a concern.

Health At Work An Independent Review Of Sickness Absence written by Carol Dame Black and has been published by The Stationery Office this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-21 with Medical categories.

Every year 140 million working days are lost to sickness absence. Most end with a swift return to work, but over 300,000 people a year fall out of work onto health-related state benefits. This Review aims to stop as many people as possible from needlessly moving away from work because of ill health, and to find ways of improving the coherence, effectiveness and cost of the system for managing sickness absence. There are potential major gains for employers, who spend £9 billion a year sick pay and associated costs, and the state, which spends £13 billion annually on health-related benefits. Currently the majority of people seeking a medical certificate are signed off as completely unfit. Until this is addressed, employers cannot make adjustments to help those people whose illness is compatible with a return to work. The central recommendation is that the Government should establish an Independent Assessment Service (IAS) which would provide an in-depth assessment of an individual's physical and/or mental function. It would also provide advice about how an individual could be supported to return to work. The service would replace GP certification. Other recommendations include: tax relief for expenditure by employers on medical treatment/vocational rehabilitation; abolishing the Percentage Threshold compensation scheme and the record-keeping obligations under statutory sick pay; introduction of a job-brokering service for long-term sick employees; end the Employment and Support Allowance assessment phase so as to improve and speed up the benefits system; improved processes in Jobcentre Plus.

Employee-Organization Linkages: The Psychology of Commitment, Absenteeism, and Turnover summarizes the theory and research on employee-organization linkages, including the processes through which employees become linked to work organizations, the quality of such linkages, and how linkages are weakened or severed. The text identifies the determinants of employee commitment, absenteeism, and turnover, as well as their consequences for the individual, work groups, and the larger organization. The book also presents conceptual models on how employees become committed to, decide to be absent from, and decide to leave their organizations. Human resource practitioners, managers, employers, and industrial psychologists will find the book very informative and insightful.
