The British Army suffered one of its greatest crises when in December 1899 the Boer irregulars inflicted three reverses in South Africa in 'Black Week'. A nation grown accustomed to success was stunned. Part of the answer was a very British blend of patriotism and pragmatism. For the first time civilian volunteers and part-time soldiers were allowed to fight overseas to the horror of traditionalist professional soldiers. Yet, by the end of the Boer War, almost 90,000 men had volunteered to serve the Colours. Much of sporting high society joined the newly formed Imperial Yeomanry. The Volunteers sent infantrymen to serve alongside the regulars and the City of London financed the raising of the City Imperial Volunteers. Men also came forward from the colonies. This book tells the story of these volunteer units.

Tells the story of how the Episcopal Church gained influence over Alabama’s cultural, political, and economic arenas despite being a denominational minority in the state The consensus of southern historians is that, since the Second Great Awakening, evangelicalism has dominated the South. This is certainly true when one considers the extent to which southern culture is dominated by evangelical rhetoric and ideas. However, in Alabama one non-evangelical group has played a significant role in shaping the state’s history. J. Barry Vaughn explains that, although the Episcopal Church has always been a small fraction (around 1 percent) of Alabama’s population, an inordinately high proportion, close to 10 percent, of Alabama’s significant leaders have belonged to this denomination. Many of these leaders came to the Episcopal Church from other denominations because they were attracted to the church’s wide degree of doctrinal latitude and laissez-faire attitude toward human frailty. Vaughn argues that the church was able to attract many of the state’s governors, congressmen, and legislators by positioning itself as the church of conservative political elites in the state--the planters before the Civil War, the “Bourbons” after the Civil War, and the “Big Mules” during industrialization. He begins this narrative by explaining how Anglicanism came to Alabama and then highlights how Episcopal bishops and congregation members alike took active roles in key historic movements including the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules closes with Vaughn’s own predictions about the fate of the Episcopal Church in twenty-first-century Alabama.

Publisher to the Decadents chronicles the experiences of Leonard Smithers (1861-1907), a key figure in the literary culture of late Victorian England. In his day he was known primarily for publishing books of upscale pornography. He became the publisher of choice for the Decadents, including most notably Oscar Wilde and Audrey Beardsley. While a young solicitor in his native Sheffield, Smithers established a correspondence with the famed explorer and translator of exotic texts, Captain Sir Richard Burton. Burton translated The Thousand Nights and a Night (popularly known as The Arabian Nights), which was published by Smithers in 1885. Smithers collaborated with Burton in the publication of two Latin texts, the Priapeia and the Carmina of Catullus, both of erotic cast. After the death of Burton in 1890, Smithers continued a significant involvement with his work, serving as an adviser to Lady Isabel Burton. During this time Smithers formed a partnership with Harry Sidney Nichols, and together they produced a series of pornographic books under the imprint of the Erotika Biblion Society. The years between 1895 and 1900 were Smithers's glory years when he managed to publish a number of books illustrated by Beardsley, a magazine known as the Savoy, and books of verse by Ernest Dowson and Arthur Symons that have proved to be the finest expression of the Decadent Movement. Throughout his career Smithers sought to produce attractive, well-made books that were tastefully designed and printed. This book provides expansive insight into the prizes and pitfalls of an early English publisher of the decadent Nineties.

First published in 1970, this book is a faithful representation of the original edition of Beltaine, a literary magazine edited by W. B. Yeats from May 1899 to April 1900. Beltaine was the first of several magazines of the Irish Literary Theatre (later to become The Abbey Theatre) in which Yeats's editorial role was of utmost importance. It was an occasional publication and focused on promoting current works of Irish playwrights whilst challenging those of their English opponents. The magazine mainly consists of a series of essays on the theatre in Dublin, and supplementing these are explanations and discussions of new plays, excerpts from which are often included. This book will be of interest to those with an interest in Yeats, early nineteenth-century literature, and Irish theatre.

In the 1930s, when Cole Worthington returned to his Boggy Depot farm in the flatlands of Oklahoma, he hoped his family would welcome him back. But after he had run away, his son, JT, had taken over to help his Christian mother bring the place to profit. JT had no desire to relinquish the authority he had earned. The son's life was ruled by religion, just as his mother's was, but of another kind: he was in constant battle with a malicious Old Testament God, as well as any human who might dare to challenge him physically. Boggy Depot was a white man's town with blacks at risk if they stayed after dark, but JT was of a mind to change that. Good friends with the family's hired black, he secretly cut down the warning sign and carried it away. . Marrying the banker's lovely daughter was part of his life plan, but that is derailed when, like his father's assumption of authority, the local beauty finds sexual distraction in a visiting evangelist whom she believes she loves. Like Cole, JT runs away, leaving his parents, his sister Susie, and baby brother Bug to cope with a series of natural catastrophes: drought, tornadoes, and finally, rains and flooding. The story has other actors: Dry with his insatiable thirst; the independent old quilter who lives in a pig shed; and the bank teller Gay, with his unfortunate ambition to please Bertie, his spoiled wife, who is also Sary's sister. Bertie has an insatiable desire for a star ruby ring whose disappearance adds to the disaster of its cost. In the end, as the drama unfolds, Bertie gets her comeuppance and Sary and JT their rewards for being steadfastly what they are - Sary, the Handmaiden of the Lord, and JT, the willing battler returned to the fray. A Critic's Review Stranger From Home is a beautifully written novel, and proves conclusively that an epic can be written in fewer than 200 pages. It is a novel to be savored not just for its characters—who emerge in the tale as if from the very soil—but also for its substance. The key to life in this story is belief, whether it be in God or fate or love, or anything. Cole fails because he is a true cynic; Sary ultimately succeeds—oil is found on Worthington land, land Cole once abandoned—because, she says, "I had faith." And JT wins, too, because he believed in battle, the necessity of tension in everyday life. He becomes a man. This novel is likely to remain undiscovered for years, but it should be recognized someday as a near-classic novel of the American spirit. Chris Goodrich in The San Francisco Review of Books
