First and foremost, this book is for YOU the FAMILY CAREGIVER. It's about what you need to know and/or do to prevent caregiver burnout and abuse while caring for someone with dementia. Think of it as your survival guide! A buffet of workable solutions. With each story, I share the dilemma I experienced while caring for my mother 24/7 with dementia. I explain how I handled it and what I learned. I deliberately kept the chapters quite short. At the end of each chapter I list 'Lessons Learned' which you can choose to use or ignore. We hear a lot about senior abuse and rightly so. But what about family caregiver abuse? Let's give family caregiver abuse the same attention and support as we do for seniors. When we are caregiving we begin thinking 'what's wrong with me'. Believe me, it's not you. The problem is dementia and you're at the receiving end. In the initial stages of dementia, it's difficult to separate the disease from your loved one. Why? Because their personality is still there but dementia pops in and out. You never know what's coming at you. Very little is written or said about how it will impact you, the caregiver. Unfortunately, I had to create solutions on the 'fly' for 18 months. I kept turning for answers and getting very little advice, if any at all. There was no guide book. I figured others must be having the same difficulties that I experienced, so I decided to pull my journal together into a book. Under the weight of caregiving 24/7, the last thing I wanted to read about was the medical effects of Alzheimer's. Outlining what it is and what it does to the person. I was already in the war zone. I was living it. I was in the trenches and I had had enough. I was now in survival mode and in serious need of guidance. Tell me how to cope with the abuse I am experiencing right now! What I realized was, unless you've experienced the nightmare of family caregiving for someone with dementia, an outsider really has no idea of what the caregiver is experiencing. And that can be a problem with family. They don't see what the problem is really. They'll say -just ignore it-, -forget about it-; and my personal favorite, -why take it so personal?' They mean well. It reminds me of the saying, 'the road to hell is paved with good intentions'. We need support, understanding and compassion. Caring for our loved one is personal. And the abuse we receive is even more so than anyone could believe. Family Caregivers are in unchartered waters. This book I hope will change that. You really are performing a wonderful, self-sacrificing service. I hope this book helps you smile, laugh and realize you are not alone. You can contact me at www.kimjoanneholden.com

An invaluable resource for everyone concerned for the vulnerable people in their lives Estimates suggest almost half of the adult population will someday be a caregiver, whether for an aging parent, an ailing partner, or a disabled family member. It is a role that tends to fall on people without warning, and almost certainly without preparation or training. Even Dr. Kimberly Fraser, a nurse who ran a large home support business, found it a struggle when her father and husband needed increasing levels of care. In this timely and urgently needed book, she gives readers sound, practical advice on how to meet with humanity and optimism the bewildering array of challenges facing caregivers: where to find help, how to navigate a confusing healthcare system, how to deal with constant demands, how to keep one's own life from being overwhelmed by new responsibilities. Based on personal experience, prodigious research, and extensive interviews, The Accidental Caregiver is an invaluable resource for everyone concerned for vulnerable people in their lives and communities.

The Family Caregiver's Survival Guide is an essential reference book for anyone undertaking the long-term care of a loved one. For over twenty years the author has been engaged in the day to day care of four separate and distinct family members, and in his attempt to help others in similar situations, this book is the result. It is not all sweetness and light in its telling, and deals frankly with the type of realities few will discuss. Even if you believe that God granted you the gift of becoming a caregiver, that doesn't mean that you will either enjoy every minute of the job or just naturally know how to be one. The first book describes a detailed personal journey for the author through the myriad day to day to week to year to..., activities involved in such care, along with tips and tidbits on how to both accomplish this sometimes rewarding, sometimes not, job, and how to stay sane in the process. As is true for all, while his experiences are often unique to his caregiving situation, many of them also share a great deal of commonality for all to benefit from. The second book concerns a state by state reference section on anything and everything available to the family caregiving situation. Organized under individual state headings, this section is an invaluable treasure trove of what might be found in the reader's state and sometimes municipality to assist both the caregiver and care-given in their long and healthy mutual lifestyles.

I Have to Leave You Now is a memoir of an Alzheimer's caregiver woven in with a practical self-help guide that deals with the day-to-day processes of caring for someone you love with this heart breaking disease. I Have to Leave You Now is like Kelly Corrigan's The Middle Place meets The 36 Hour Day. Unlike other books on Alzheimer's written by M.D.'s, Ph.D.'s, or other experts on the disease, this book is written by an R.N., a professional caregiver who also has first-hand personal experience with caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. Caring for a dementia patient is a 24/7 job, and often the caregiver has no help. With the average life expectancy of five to ten years from diagnosis, this is a long haul. It can be extremely difficult to hold up under those difficult conditions. Whether you are just starting your caretaking journey or have been doing it for years and feel you will never make it through, I Have to Leave You Now: A Survival Guide for Caregivers of Alzheimer's Patients will help you get back on track and become a healthier and more effective caregiver.
