Studying Action Adventure Cinema written by Wayne O'Brien and has been published by Auteur Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-01 with Art categories.

Studying Action-Adventure Cinema revisits the roots of action-adventure films and contextualizes the genre, particular with reference to the development of the Western. Wayne O'Brien describes conventions and audience expectations and reproduces diverse case studies that trace the evolution of action-adventure films from the 1970s to today. The volume investigates the impact of action-adventure cinema on the industrial dynamics of Hollywood, considering Star Wars (1977) and its early 1980s sequels, along with Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) and its sequels. Since the release of Tim Burton's Batman (1989), comic books have become key contributors to the wider action-adventure genre. O'Brien discusses adaptations of DC and Marvel Comics characters, considering their implications for issues of gender, discrimination, justice, and law. He also features case studies on the representation of masculinity and femininity. Analyzed films include Michael Bay's Bad Boys (1995) and Bad Boys II (2003) and the Lara Croft and Charlie's Angels's series. A concluding chapter weighs the impact of 9/11 on action-adventure cinema, questioning the effect of real world events on screen representations, particularly in the The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), Casino Royale (2006), and Stephen Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005).

Spectacular Bodies written by Yvonne Tasker and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-02 with Social Science categories.

While films such as Rambo, Thelma and Louise and Basic Instinct have operated as major points of cultural reference in recent years, popular action cinema remains neglected within contemporary film criticism. Spectacular Bodies unravels the complexities and pleasures of a genre often dismissed as `obvious' in both its pleasure and its politics, arguing that these controversial films should be analysed and understood within a cinematic as well as a political context. Yvonne Tasker argues that today's action cinema not only responds to the shifts in gendered, sexual and racial identities which took place during the 1980s, but reflects the influences of other media such as the new video culture. Her detailed discussion of the homoeroticism surrounding the muscleman hero, the symbolic centrality of blackness within the crime narrative, and the changing status of women within the genre, addresses the constitution of these identities through the shifting categories of gender, class, race, sex, sexuality and nation. Spectacular Bodies also examines the ambivalence of supposedly secure categories of popular cinema, questioning the existing terms of film criticism in this area and addressing the complex pleasures of this neglected form.

Action Cinema Since 2000 addresses an increasingly lively and evolving field of scholarship, probing the definition and testing the potential of action cinema to reframe the mode for the 21st century. Contributors examine a broad range of content, from blockbusters to smaller independent films, originating from China, Korea, India, France, the USA, and Mexico. Ranging from JSA: Joint Security Area (Gondonggeonygbi guyeok) (2000) to Polite Society (2023), they consider the changing modes of action cinema, with streaming assuming global importance and an ever-increasing number of generic blends. They consider under-explored areas of action film, particularly how race, ethnicity, gender, and age figure in narratives and through image and soundtracks. Overall, the book demonstrates how 21st century action cinema engages with and reflects geopolitical, creative, and industrial developments. Contributors argue that it continues to offer fantasies of empowerment and mobility that say much about how power is understood in diverse contexts today.

This volume examines the cinema of adventure, distinct from action and action-adventure. It argues that the adventurer is separate from the action hero and that the cinema of adventure—from tales of gods and monsters defied by mythic heroes to stories of crusaders conquering far-flung territories, from true-life accounts of survival or death at the extreme reaches of human endurance to science-fiction stories of journeys beyond human conception—represents a life-affirming confrontation with our collective mortality and spiritual immortality. Adventure heroes do not fear death like action heroes. They embrace and transcend death with a conviction grounded in a faith that extends behind and before them into eternity. They achieve immortality by telling and retelling their tales across media forms in spite of social and technological change.

Action Movies: The Cinema of Striking Back is a study of action cinema, exploring the ethics and aesthetics of the genre with reference to its relatively short history. It moves from seminal classics like Bullitt (1968) and Dirty Harry (1971) through epoch-defining films like Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Die Hard (1988) to revisions, reboots, and renewals in films like Kill Bill Vol. 1 (2003), Taken (2008), and The Expendables (2010). The action genre is a fusion of form and content: a cinema of action about action. It is a cinema of the will, configured as a decisive reaction to untenable circumstances. Action heroes take up arms against the sea of troubles that beset them, safe in the knowledge that if they don't do it, nobody will. Though this makes the action movie profoundly disturbing as an embodiment of moral ideology, its enduring appeal proves the appetite for assurance remains undiminished, even in the wake of 9/11.
