Excerpt from The Administration of Public Education the United States The careful and scholarly study of the administration of education in the United States by my colleagues, Professors Dutton and Snedden, is a valuable and timely contribution to the literature of education. In a democratic State, it is of first importance that the relation of the State to the organs and agencies of culture and enlightenment be clearly defined and well understood. The wise and truly representative organization and administration of education is only a little less important than the organization and conduct of the edu cational process itself. Excerpt from Public Education in the South This book is the outgrowth of several years' study of public educational problems in the United States, especially in the South, through courses in the history of education given at Trinity College and the University of North Carolina for teachers and prospective teachers and administrators. In such courses the aim has been to consider the principal problems of administration, support, and supervision of present-day education in the Southern States and to seek an understanding of their meaning in the light of their historical growth. The book is therefore a study of actual educational progress in the South rather than of educational theories and the relation between education and economic, social, political, and religious influences is given emphasis. Excerpt from Public School Administration a Statement of the Fundamental, Principles Underlying the Organization, and Administration of Public Education In making the statement of principles of action the au thor has sought to avoid what seems to him to be the com mon defect of most of the books on school administration so far produced, and that is such a nice balancing of argu ments that the book is, practically colorless. He has also tried to avoid the production of a book of mere facts and figures. Such facts can be obtained without difficulty, and as needed from public-school documents. Instead, he has endeavored to make a book containing such a clear state ment of fundamental principles that either the lay reader or the student, on finishing it, shall know what ought to be done, and why. To give a student ideals for his work, and to establish in his mind proper principles of action, has always seemed to the writer an essential part of any course on public-school administration. Excerpt from The Administration of Education in a Democracy This book was projected with the idea that the time is here for such a preliminary treatment, as an organic whole, of the field of educational administration. In seeking for a unifying principle the inevitable choice fell to our national ideals as expressed in democracy as we Americans have conceived it. The aim has been to deal with principles, giving just enough space to history and description to furnish a suitable background and to account for sequences. In this way only did it seem possible to deal with the prob lems presented in such a constructively critical manner as the situation seemed to demand. The book makes its appeal (1) to teachers and stu dents of education, (2) to school boards and all school officials, and (3) to public men and legislators interested in a comprehensive survey of the problems of public education. Excerpt from The Gary Public Schools: Organization and Administration In the last few years both laymen and professional educators have engaged in a lively controversy as to the merits and defects, advantages and disadvantages of what has come to be called the Gary idea or the Gary plan. The rapidly increasing literature bearing on the subject is, however, deficient in details and too often partisan in tone. The present study was undertaken by the General Education Board at the request of the Gary school authorities for the purpose of presenting an accurate and comprehensive account of the Gary schools in their significant aspects. In the several volumes in which the main features of the Gary schools are separately considered, the reader will observe that, after presenting facts, each of the authors discusses or - in technical phrase - attempts to evaluate the Gary plan from the angle of his particular interest. Facts were gathered in a patient, painstaking, and objective fashion; and those who want facts, and facts only, will, it is believed, find them in the descriptive and statistical portions of the respective studies. Excerpt from School Administration and School Reports In accordance with the general purpose of the book, the first essay deals with the Meaning of Education. This essay endeavors to outline spe cifically, though in general terms, the necessary educational doctrine of a superintendent of public schools in a democratic society like ours, and it sug gests also in outline the different kinds of schools which the conception of education defined in the essay requires for its embodiment in practice. In other words, the first essay attempts to outline briefly educational Opportunity in relation to con temporary educational needs. The nature of the second essay is defined in its title, Some Principles of School Administration. This essay was originally read at the meeting of the Department of Superintendence of the National Education Association in 1913. It attempts to set forth in a brief, but it is hoped in a definite, way cer tain fundamental principles which every superin tendent who seeks to define his administrative policy needs to assimilate. The third essay deals with Town and City School Reports, More Particularly Superintendents' Re ports, and aims to achieve two distinct but related purposes; first, to show the unsatisfactory character of most school reports as they are; and second, to suggest definite ways of improving them. Much uncertainty undoubtedly exists in the minds of su perintendents concerning the aims, scope, and method of the reports which they are required to submit from time to time for the information of the school board, the teaching staff, and the public. This essay seeks to define these important elements of school reports, and the writer hopes that it will be found of service in the field which it covers. It was read at the meeting of Section L, in December, 1915 (chairman's address), and was printed in School and Society for January 29 and February 16, 1916. American Education Classic Reprint written by Andrew S. Draper and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-08 with categories.

Excerpt from American Education IT is nearly a quarter of a century since Mr. Draper eu tered upon the work of educational administration to which his life has since been given. He brought to this high task an unusual natural endowment and a still more unusual experience with men and affairs. He did not come to the task of administration from the school-room or the labora tory, but from most active participation in affairs and with the practical interests of men. Experience had given him a sense of proportion and perspective, as well as a knowledge of men, and nature had endowed him with a simple and sturdy directness of thought and speech which gave added weight both to his words and to his deeds. N 0 other American, I think, has, like Mr. Draper, been successively charged with the administration of a state system of public instruction, with the oversight of the schools of a city of considerable size, with the direction of one of the tax-supported state universities of the country, and finally with the supervision and control of the educa tional activities of an entire commonwealth. As a result, Mr. Draper has been forced, in the daily performance of the duties of his several offices, to approach the educational problem from many different points of view and to see it under almost all of its limitations and difficulties. He has been a frequent and persuasive speaker at educational gatherings and assemblies, and he has written much for publication, in addition to the preparation of luminous, as well as voluminous, official reports. The fruit of this unusual experience and activity is pre sented in this volume in something like systematic form. Excerpt from Administration The title of High School Administration is used because the purpose has been to discuss the problems of secondary edu cation as they are found to exist in the only distinctively American institution which undertakes to deal with them in a concrete way. It is, perhaps, needless to add that the greater part of the materials here presented have been developed in the laboratory of experience in various phases of public school administration, chiefly of high schools. Excerpt from Our Schools: Their Administration and Supervision The book has been prepared for the school and for the pri vate library, for teachers' reading circles, and as a text for class use in colleges and normal schools. Without presenting the ideal, it is meant to present standards by which the schools of a community may fairly be judged. The various matters set truth in the Appendix are meant to be suggestive and helpful, rather than prescriptive.
