In his magisterial two-volume work, Eric Gautier brings to life, with unerring historical precision, the constant struggle for maritime supremacy between the French and English during the second half of the eighteenth century. In so doing, he fuses the breadth of Dumas with the accuracy of O’Brian and the charm of Forester, creating his own distinct and trustworthy voice. His hero, a young French noble, orphaned in mysterious circumstances, enrols as a Navy cadet at Brest and so begins a long and painful odyssey of self-discovery. His journey takes him from the seedy back streets of Brest and Saint-Malo to the corridors of power at Versailles, from the Bastille to the coasts of Cornwall, the West Indies, America, South Africa and India. He participates in many of the major naval engagements of the time, suffering wounds and innumerable setbacks as he doggedly uncovers the dark truth behind his mother’s kidnap and murder. As the work’s translator, Roger D. Taylor, says in his foreword: ‘The enemy is of course the Royal Navy, and it is refreshing to have a different perspective on the great naval actions of the pre-Napoleonic era. There is nothing rose-tinted about this perspective; the author’s rigorous historical sense, backed up by painstaking research of contemporary documentation, tells it just as it was. Nothing is glorified or distorted for cheap effect. The overall impact of the writing is so much the greater because of this.’ This book is Volume Two of a two-volume series.

Usati is a four year old growing up in Sunnyvale, a small, poor and remote sugar cane farming village in Trinidad in the 1940’s. He describes the world he sees, and captures the language and culture of the mainly illiterate peasant workers who live around him. There is widespread belief in black magic, and nearby is the infamous silk-cotton tree which houses the evil spirits who are responsible for all the ills of the village. Usati looks after his two younger siblings. Even as a four year old he has to be a human shield for the neighbour on several occasions in the face of domestic violence. Life is hard and brutal with constant fear of violence and beatings. Following his mother’s death the children are brought up by their grandparents, but there are further constant upheavals within the family. Violence remains within all parts of this society, as is crime and suffering. Usati observes how his family suffers through their illiteracy and the society within which they live. Usati battles for a good education. He vows to bring literacy to the village and to fight against the cruelty that surrounds him. Usati and B started as teenage lovers, but can their love survive and endure a lifetime from the wicked curse and traumas of the intervening years?

Masinissa Ally Of Carthage written by Rob Edmunds and has been published by Troubador Publishing Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-28 with Fiction categories.

Masinissa: Ally of Carthage is the first part of the story of the experiences of the Numidian Prince and later King Masinissa during the Second Punic War between Rome and Carthage. Masinissa’s involvement in the war was substantial, even pivotal, and he is still revered today across North Africa as the founding father of the Amazigh/Berber people. The story begins in 2013 BC in Carthage, which has been Masinissa’s home for several years. He has fallen in love with Sophonisba, the beautiful daughter of one of the most senior Carthaginian generals. The two make promises to one another before Masinissa embarks west to enter the war as the commander of a substantial cavalry division. In terms of the wider world, Rome and Carthage – the most powerful nations of the time – have been at war for five years, ever since Hannibal crossed the Alpine passes and inflicted catastrophic and crippling defeats on the Roman armies at the battles of Trebia, Lake Trasimene and, most devastatingly, at Cannae, where an army of nearly 90,000 Romans was completely destroyed. The main theatres of war at this moment are the Roman siege of the Greek city of Syracuse in Sicily – which is being innovatively and belligerently defended, not least by the philosopher and scientist Archimedes – and the war in Iberia, which Masinissa is about to join with his Numidian forces.
