San Zang and his disciples journey to the West under constant threat of attack from monsters and demons, as well as a seemingly endless string of tests invented for them by the very deities who set them on their adventure. Amid the hardship, it is easy to forget the many ways in which the four friends have helped numerous people along the way. Now, a vengeful ghost comes forth to ask the priest and his traveling companions for their help in righting a terrible injustice that cost him his life and his kingdom three years earlier. While reading Buddhist scriptures during this first night in the temple, San Zang falls asleep, and in his dream he is approached by a ghost. The ghost was once the King of WuJi, a kingdom that suffered through a period of terrible drought before being rescued by a Taoist hermit named QuanZhen. QuanZhen then overthrew the kingdom by killing the king and taking his appearance, his wife, and his throne. The ghost asks the priest to avenge his death by recovering his kingdom, but the priest is worried that no one will believe the story.

Chosen by a goddess and an emperor, and hunted by almost everyone else, Sun Wu Kong, San Zang, and their new companion, Zhu Bajie, have overcome numerous obstacles on their journey to the West, from monster kings to mountain bandits to sea dragons. Now, the three companions face three very different trials that will test their fidelity, their compassion, and their individual impulses. Failure will doom the journey; success will make them stronger, and give them one final, invaluable companion. The travelers continue west until they come upon an impossibly wide and impassible river whose water will not allow even a flower to float. There they are met by Sha Wujing, a sea monster who protects the river and eats any who dares to cross. Wu Kong determines that they must defeat the monster if they are to cross the river successfully. He and Bajie engage the creature three times; three times they fail. At the peak of frustration, Wu Kong decides to ask the Goddess of Mercy for help. She tells Wu Kong that the sea creature has been waiting for them, and will join them on their journey; it turns out that Sha Wujing, like Wu Kong and Bajie, once held an official position in the heavens but was expelled for angering the Jade Emperor.

San Zang and his three disciples have just overcome the greatest threat to their journey so far: their fidelity to one another. San Zang and Wu Jing are brought to the lair of the two kings, who decide to throw an elaborate feast in which the priest will be the main course. In the mean time, Sun Wu Kong has been freed from under the three mountains by several guardian spirits. It turns out that the monster kings are two of Tai Shang's disciples, chosen by the Goddess of Mercy to become monsters in order to test Wu Kong and his friends on their journey. As the four friends continue on to the West, they are humble and introspective, but Sun Wu Kong is very angry with the Goddess...

When he gets halfway down the river with San Zang and Zhu Bajie in his boat, the demon makes his identity known and kidnaps the monk and the pig, taking them to his palace deep in the water. Sun Wu Kong, the most powerful of San Zang's disciples, cannot understand how he was unable to detect the monster's disguise, as he has been able to do throughout their journey. Meanwhile, Sha Wu Jing plunges into the water to find his master and his elder brother. He finds the palace and calls out the Alligator Demon, but the foe proves to be too strong...
