The Aesthetics Of Industrial Design written by Richard Herriott and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-30 with Architecture categories.

This textbook introduces design students to key principles of three-dimensional form, bridging aesthetics and practical design objectives. It explores how we see and what it is that characterises visually appealing and satisfactory design. Written by an experienced designer, educator and researcher, The Aesthetics of Industrial Design equips students with the knowledge and understanding of how aesthetically superior design is distinct from lesser work. It explains the key principles and concepts they can incorporate into their own designs, encourages readers to investigate and experiment with real design problems and enables them to verbally communicate their design intentions. The book prompts readers to critically reflect on their work and surroundings. Through numerous clear examples and illustrated case studies, which are guided by cognitive science and the application of aesthetic theory, the book brings together the basic aspects of design as form-giving. It explores the balance of function, material and appearance in detail and explains the reasons for common aesthetic faults and how to avoid them. Aimed at undergraduate- and postgraduate-level students within the design fields, this book reveals the secrets to aesthetically successful products that readers can take from education into future practice.

Competition among companies that produce complex or large product portfolios has created a need to use modularity strategies not only to flexibly manage technical complexity in a cost-effective manner but also to produce visually appealing products. This research aims to understand how the visual appearance of products is affected by modular product development strategies and creates coherent product brands. Thus, this study examines the intersection of design aesthetics, product portfolio management, product brand management, and design management. Specifically, this study aims to understand how such strategies constrain and generate possibilities when the industrial design process concerns itself with visual appearance. The main research approach has been qualitative multi-case methodology (Miles et al, 2014; Eisenhardt, 1989) and design theory building (Chakrabarti and Blessing, 2016) that collects data through interviews, experimentation, and theoretical studies based on findings in the literature. Sixteen face-to-face interviews were conducted with design vice presidents, senior designers, and senior design engineers at five Swedish manufacturers from the automotive, MedTech, consumer goods, commercial vehicles, and materials handling industries. This approach has resulted in the description of three theoretical models and a design method, product gist, for investigating prototypicality in a product category. Aesthetic flexibility reflects the requirement that under certain circumstances an industrial designer has to plan for future (as yet unknown) changes in a design. Each of the three theoretical models has a different focus: one model describes three ways manufacturing companies organise a strategic in-house design function; one model describes how design decisions are made on a general level through an intuitive and knowledge-based judgment process; and one model describes the strategies a manager needs to consider when developing an existing product portfolio and how the strategies influence industrial design practice. Understanding visual flexibility serves as a starting point for further investigations of how development strategies affect visual product design. This understanding provides industrial designers insight into how they can develop product systems that share design components across product lines to promote brand identity. The findings of this work illustrate and explain a complex and multi-facetted design phenomenon that many designers manage more or less intuitively today; therefore, this study advances the understanding of the field for academics, teachers, and professional designers.

The Nature And Aesthetics Of Design written by David Pye and has been published by Airlife this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Crafts & Hobbies categories.

In this brilliant exposition of the many facets of good design, David Pye investigates the scientific nature of function and its tenuous relationship to form. He explores the priority of economy, physical components, and manufacturing technique; and he clarifies the relative utilitarian and aesthetic roles of design. It establishes a basic theory of design where none existed before. Written in a lucid style and in jargon-free language, it is a healthy correction to critiques of the past century. This is a penetrating, provocative and utterly stimulating book that everyone should read--for design is everywhere.

A fresh & insightful view of a period in American art & design that has been given little due & even less analytical thought. In the 30s, when industrial design emerged as an American profession, its founders hoped to create a coherent environment for what they self-consciously referred to as "the machine age." They aimed to renew the marriage of art & industry. Chapters: a consumer society & its discontents; machine aesthetics; the new industrial designers; selling industrial design; industrialized design; everything from a match to a city; the practical ultimate; from depression to expression; & a microcosm of the machine-age world. B&W photos.

Why do we readily dispose of some things, whereas we keep and maintain others for years, despite their obvious wear and tear? Can a greater understanding of aesthetic value lead to a more strategic and sustainable approach to product design? Aesthetic Sustainability: Product Design and Sustainable Usage offers guidelines for ways to reduce, rethink, and reform consumption. Its focus on aesthetics adds a new dimension to the creation, as well as the consumption, of sustainable products. The chapters offer innovative ways of working with expressional durability in the design process. Aesthetic Sustainability: Product Design and Sustainable Usage is related to emotional durability in the sense that the focus is on the psychological and sensuous bond between subject and object. But the subject–object connection is based on more than emotions: aesthetically sustainable objects continuously add nourishment to human life. This book explores the difference between sentimental value and aesthetic value, and it offers suggestions for operational approaches that can be implemented in the design process to increase aesthetic sustainability. This book also offers a thorough presentation of aesthetics, focusing on the correlation between the philosophical approach to the aesthetic experience and the durable design experience. The book is of interest to students and scholars working in the fields of design, arts, the humanities and social sciences; additionally, it will speak to designers and other professionals with an interest in sustainability and aesthetic value.

The Industrial Designer S Guide To Sketching written by Nenad Pavel and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Drawing categories.

In recent years, there has been a rapid growth of interest in the establishment of hybrid educational programs which merge design and engineering. Due to the condensed and multidisciplinary nature of this type of education, instruction in studio-based drawing must be intensified and communicated more efficiently. Two additional factors have redefined the need for conventional drawing skills as well: the domination of CAD-rendered drawings for detailed product depiction and the increased focus on product development collaboration. New textbooks which target communication and visual thinking through industrial design drawing have been hard to find until now. Nenad Pavels book assumes that a student has prior knowledge of the basics of form, perspective and shading. He presents a toolbox of techniques and instructions for how industrial designers can improve their hand-sketched visual communication. He also addresses diverse issues which a designer often confronts: product conception, aesthetics, construction, form and interface. The clear, practical and illustrative approach makes the authors points easy to implement in a short amount of time. This insures that it will be of interest to many related disciplines, including architecture and engineering, as well as being appropriate for the general public with an interest in skill-based design drawing.
